Base Reality
Where are we and what’s the reality of the situation. If we are in space, aliens are not weird. If we are on a farm, chickens are not weird. How do we act on a farm oppose to the DMV, how do we act at a party oppose to a church. We need to fulfill the obligations of the normal (base reality) before we distort reality. If we skip over offers the offer becomes base reality immediately, so if I have a peg leg and it’s not identified as unusual what else might be true, maybe we are on a pirate ship, maybe I have a parrot, maybe we find out I want to marry my parrot, but if out of nowhere I bring up remixing the new Skrillex album it might be funny and might become the playable thing, but it does not easily fit in our base reality. If we don’t know what the normal is it’s hard to decide what is weird. As stated by Mark Twain: “First get your facts rights then distort them at your leisure”.
Defining Some Improv Terms
Base Reality
The Base Reality is the basic situation of the scene. The Who, What, and Where. The foundation of the scene to build everything else on top of.
Premise
The Premise is the entrance way into the scene. This can work as a hook that gets your scene partner and audience paying attention to the scene.
Game
The game is the focus of the scene. The overall point that everything else in the scene serves. It is the funniest part of the scene that you want to see keep happening.
Justification
The justification is what adds depth to the scene. It can strengthen the foundation allowing the rest of the scene to become more absurd. It also expands the scene by creating more ideas for the improvisers to explore.
Heightening
Heightening dictates the momentum of the scene. Are you going to play fast and heighten to absurdity, or will you play slower and grounded, and heighten more subtly.
