#JackedKirby - Mail Call with the FF!!!! 4️⃣4️⃣4️⃣4️⃣ Marvel knew they were on to something pretty early on when they started publishing the Fantastic Four... it was extremely well received and they began touting it as “The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine” right on the actual cover! But they may have gotten a bit behind in production ideas, because #Issue11 from February of 1963 has quite the weird pacing/plotting throughout the issue... 4️⃣4️⃣4️⃣4️⃣ The cover of issue (Pic 2) touts a battle with an alien invader called The Impossible Man... but that interaction is only a 8 page back up story in the rear of the book. The real main story of the issue involves the FF donning disguises and buying copies of their own comic on the newsstand... and then answering fan letters!!! 4️⃣4️⃣4️⃣4️⃣ Now while this might not seem as such a great concept it’s actually genius planning by Jack and Stan when it is clear they were stumped on what to do for a whole issue... they took actual fan letters and weaves them into a feature, and Jack matched his art to the necessary components of the letters... a perfect fill in story. I love the opening splash of the issue, with the little kid showing off his newest monthly copy of the FF and bragging about his letter being published... all while the real FF conspicuously blend into the background in plain clothes!!!
