What's the best initiation you've ever heard?
We asked ImprovBoston community members for answers to some of the most common questions asked by improvisers.
This week’s question: What's the best initiation you've ever heard?
“The simpler the better. Nobody likes it when you give all the information at the top. So my favorite? ‘I love pizza, Mr. Stallone.’” - Nate Lopez
"’Let's hook the coffin to the go kart.’ - Ian Roberts” - Peter Fenzel
"’I see you have a fear of spiders. I've found a cure. It's a lot of spiders’- Marc Campasano” - Ian Dyer
“’Look I know you're a wood hermit but I need to check your gas meter, OKAY?' - Conor Allen initiating a scene in rehearsal in which we forced him to play all the characters.” - Kate McGroarty
“ Aaron Schmidt initiating a scene with me by screaming, ‘TEAR UP THAT SUICIDE NOTE RIGHT NOW!!’” - Meg Sinick
“The best initiation is the one you treat like it's the best. The worst is the one you swat to the ground like it's filth. My favorite happens to be, ‘Charles, I've taken your plane!’(which happened to be a "bad" suggestion that day because it was mostly ignored.)” - Erik Volkert
"’Nobody wants to be the president of the United States, Barack, but you gotta do it. - David Thomas” - Andrew Barlow
“’But it's the big game!’ - Paul Dome” - Sara Burns
“The single best show I've ever seen was a Dummy show (Coleen Doyle and Jason Shotts) and their initiation was the two of them sitting in chairs as if they were both in bed. She was embarrassed and didn't want to be there anymore or look at him. He was super proud of what they've just done. They sat in that energy for about 40 seconds and it was amazing. Everything we needed to know was right there done with no words and hardly any movement. She was nervously looking around the room and he was nodding looking right at her with a huge smile on his face. I think that's the best initiation I've ever seen.” - Matt Pina

Improv Etiquette
I love improv so much. Listening. I think that's the key. When you improvise, you put a lot of pressure on yourself to create, and to be generating information, and trying to be funny, but if you just listen to what's being said to you, and then react honestly, you generally get better results.
Rob Riggle
If an improviser steps out first, give them a second to get their idea out, and no more.
