My first try at improv quilting! These are made with the leftovers from my cat quilt. I also want to try a quilt-as-you go project, which these will be perfect for — I can use them to get some practice with my walking foot, and join them up once I have enough blocks for a decent-sized quilt.

On the one hand there is the bright pink color enthusiast who wants every bit of art to be a colorful explosion. Then there is the the other half who wants everything to be made with subtle, understated hues. My house is empty and white but my studio is crammed with color. These two halves are not only alive inside my artistic mind but in my everyday life as well. Just thinking about all this as I am finally getting around to completing this #naturaldye (onions and indigo) #improvquilt top I started a few months ago.

When you finish a quilt top, what do you do with any extra fabric? I always take those pieces, no matter how scrappy, and use them on the back. It always makes a unique #improvquilt design, comprised of leftover yardage, trimming strips, and blocks they didn’t turn out just quite right. Somehow, together, it always works! The back of this #snowballsaint quilt is no different - made of those same trimmings, wonky blocks, and extra 1” square, it’s a true exercise in #improvquilting. All, that is, except for the strip that has the Saints names - this piece was 100% planned. The strip is part of the Snowball Saints panel, and is designed to list the names of the Saints, in order, row by row, from the front of the quilt. This way you’ll always know who is who! Thanks for following along on this Snowball Saint journey - just so excited about this little quilt and can’t wait to release it on Monday. ...so back to those backs. How do you make and plan your quilt backs? Do you do one solid piece of fabric, or are yours scrappy like mine?
