After sitting on my shelf for almost a year, I’m finally adding the binding onto the #jessetreequilt - finally! I’m going with a scrappy purple border, as I wanted to carry the look of Advent through in another way. By bringing the various tones of purple as a border, that light penitent feel is brought through the edging. I love it. Days 14-15: Wait for it…wait for it…and then keep waiting. After all, that's one of the theme of today's block. Today we're sewing a non-descript building in Jerusalem, one where some of the disciples may have retreated to after a harrowing Friday. I can imagine them there, consoling each other, sharing fears alongside hopes. The two yellow windows, with the lights (candles) still on, are meant to represent these same disciples, up late at night as they wait. Today's block is a forgiving one with some options to make it a tad easier, as you'll see in the video, if you don't want to piece the grass - but of course I recommend that you do. The blades of grass will break up the straight lines of the building and create a lovely effect of a building nestled among the greenery. Days 10-11: Ready for a little bread and wine? It's five o'clock somewhere, so if you care to join me in a glass of red wine as we create today's block, be my guest. Juxtaposition is defined as two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect. Our block today, another table scene that will sit directly beside the table scene we created yesterday, create perfect juxtaposition. One block is about betrayal, the other about faithfulness. One block is about love of money, the other about love of others. Today, we recreate the Last Supper. Days 8-9: I wish there was a way to incorporate sound effects into a post! With today's block being based on Spy Wednesday, I feel like the email should have come with that ominous “Da-Da-DAAAA” sound the moment you opened it! Today we begin work on the second row of our quilt as we recreate the bag of silver coins Judas received in his betrayal of Jesus. We'll again be appliqueing today, but this will be the last time we applique - just straight foundation paper piecing from here on out. Days 6-7: Today we begin work on the fig tree – and if you're looking for a good fig recipe to accompany this beautiful block, I've got you covered here (stuff your figs with goat cheese, pop them in the oven until the cheese bubbles, pour on a balsamic reduction, and enjoy)! Today's block is our first dive into applique. So, just like we had a few days ago, you'll see there are two videos available for you today. The first is specific to today's block and the quilt along, while the second dives into how to applique. We'll cover it briefly in the main QAL video, but - again - since we're all at different stages on our quilting journey, an extra deep dive may help. It uses our “Love Letters” (inspired by St. Paul) block, but the technique is the same regardless of what block you're working on. Days 4-5: So how did your Palm Sunday block turn out? Can you forgive me for that palm frond? Haha! I honestly love the way yesterday's block turned out with all that detail. Today's block is much more simple, and the focus here is straight lines. We'll talk more about this in the video, but the key to today's block is making sure all those right angles stay right angles. In looking at the photo above, you'll see all but two pieces - the hillside of grass on each side - is a 90-degree angle. So, as you sew, be mindful that your pieces stay straight and sharp. Our houses of worship have changed in size and shape over the years, but one thing remains: we still worship, love, and are loved by the same God as our Jewish sisters and brothers. Days 2-3: Welcome to our first sewing day as we sew this beautiful Holy Week quilt! Today we start the real work of sewing those blocks, beginning with Palm Sunday. As mentioned yesterday, you'll have two full days to create each of the blocks, so don't feel rushed…and please don't hate me for designing each of those palm fronds! It'll be a bit of finger picking fun when it comes to removing the paper on this one, but I promise it's both the most pieced block and worth the effort. Day 1: Welcome to the Holy Week quilt along! Today is the very first day, and it's all about the prep work - in fact, we're not even going to touch our sewing machines today. Instead, we're going to spend the day getting our papers cut out, attached, and ready for tomorrow when we'll begin sewing. You'll find a video in my profile that will talk you through everything you need to know as we get started sewing our Redemption Story. Holy Week is a week that we all know the stories of, but is one that we sometimes rush through in the anticipation - and business - that Easter brings. In creating this quilt, I wanted to take an opportunity to slow down and create intentionality behind each significant moment of these eight holy days. If we enter into each day with a sense of intentionality, we are able to slow down and focus on not only what happened on a specific day but why it was significant and how it is relevant to our lives today. By slowly creating the eight blocks in this quilt, day by day, we are embarking on a journey that creates those intentional opportunities and enables us to grow. Do you put tags in your finished quilts? I always slip the little "Faith and Fabric" tag in there, but just started putting the date on the back, too, because my new @janome sewing machine sews letters and numbers! I really like having the date sewn on the back; it adds something special, like a little memory that gets tucked away. Shoutout to @olaf for their amazing rotary cutters that gave this binding such a sharp trim edge, and @sulky for making such beautiful threads that matched perfectly with the @hoffmanfabrics I used! I love me a good quilt twist photo! The geometric design in this quilt makes the perfect twist, and those little eyes of the chicks are just peeping out (haha! Get it? Peeping? Peeps? Chicks?). Block #2 in the #easterchicksquilt is done - and adorable! This little chick looks ready for action as she pops out of her shell, eyes wide open and ready to go. These Bali batiks by @hoffmanfabrics are so lovely in this quilt! Today’s Shell Shattering question, prompted by this energetic little gal, is: what are your favorite sports? When it comes to traditional sports…I avoid them. If there’s a ball involved, I run in the other direction 🤣 That said, I LOVE weight training, TRX, swimming, and barre. It’s here! The #olgquilt is done, just in time for her feast day tomorrow. Ok, ok, almost done - she still needs binding but I don’t know what color to bind with (leave me a comment with your thought. Red? Teal? Yellow? Something else?) I’m so insanely excited about this quilt - never have I made a quilt AND the fabrics for it before. It’s been such a joy! And a challenge! Ha! Today’s progress on the #olgquilt - starting to piece the star fabrics around Our Lady. Much like the red fabric inspired by her dress, the blue matches her mantle and the yellow the stars in the sky. I designed the blue stars to be slightly smaller than the yellow, which gives them a visual interest that they wouldn’t have if they were the same size. You guys, she is a perfect fit! I'm so glad I went back and adjusted the design in the original fabric...look how perfectly Our Lady of Guadalupe fits inside these two quilt blocks. Plus, that repeating pattern in the corner - love! These are the last two blocks that I'm making for the quilt designed with the red fabric inspired by her dress...now it's off to making these squares even larger with with a bit of star power. My machine sounded a bit like a train with a ten ton load behind it today sewing...and then the needle broke. The culprit ended up being a bunch of thread, fibers, and other general ick stuck inside my bobbin case! The worst part is my machine, a @janomeamerica M7, has been giving me repeated warnings about it. I've been giving it the quick clean, but didn't really take the time to clean it out all the way.
