First ‘major’ repair made by us

So the drive back made us think the car was a bit sluggish. I mean we know it’s never going to be the fastest thing, but it still felt somewhat lacking in the higher revs. 

Well I happened to know that a common fault with these things is the Intake Manifold Runner Control playing up after a few years and often needs a little TLC.  What’s the IMRC you say? Well it’s a box of cogs and wires that open up the secondary inlets via butterfly valves above 3.6k rpm.  All very Heath Robinson, but it works. Kinda.

The problem is the IMRC contains a little transistor that in particular suffers from overheating (see that component with three pins with a hole in it, half way down the circuit board? That’s it).  So Ford decided the best thing to do was bolt it securely to the manifold where it never gets hot. Yeah, as I said elsewhere, geniuses at work.  Thankfully they are about 50p each, take a couple of minutes to swap and, in this case, it seems to have removed the flat spot when revving.  We’ll relocate it later, probably using cable ties under the battery tray.  Very Heath Robinson, but it works....
