Naples’ Fontanelle cemetery: skulls and silence beneath the busy city streets
In an underground chamber in the Italian city, the skulls of plague victims are stacked high but the traditions surrounding their preservation are ultimately uplifting, telling us a lot about the human capacity for caring.

12.5.16// -8// Spring has come. Summer is next to. Between one study session and another, I went out for a walk, saw colourful flowers and a lush meadow, and the sunshine was illuminating the gulf of my beautiful city. I love Summer, time to live outside homes and roofs. Now I'm sitting at my desk, eating cherries, with the window open, "und sehne ich nach dem frischen Luft und der strahlenden Sonne" ( “I'm dying to get that fresh air and bright sun” - this should be a proper translation but since there's not such a word like "Sehnsucht" in English and Italian, I needed to say this In German).
Happy that this paper is turning out well. Tomorrow I'm sending everything to my supervisor, she looked very satisfied last time, hope she hasn't changed her mind, out of the blue.
Some shoots of Naples gulf. This is a declaration of Love.
My fav veg place 🍏 I love that bench and the quote hanging. It says: “Men, unable to defeat death, misery and ignorance, would rather be happy and not think about it”
How is it so far?
It’s nice—great food and views. You can see Mt. Vesuvius by standing on the balcony of our hotel. In fact, we’re going to Pompeii tomorrow!
Today we went to two museums, the Capodimonte (full of fancy Renaissance and Baroque art) and the Archeological Museum of Napoli (with lots of ancient Roman sculpture). I may have started a list of renaissance paintings that included funny expressions and nice bottoms.
The only thing that would make this better is if you guys were here to see everything with me!
