I think we should stop using the word “Link Building” and replace it with “Content Marketing”. Since just building link is not enough to gain good positions in search engines, let alone authority. You need contents and also disseminate them in various relevant sites.
With the Panda update “Topical” Authority is already the big thing for SEO. If you want to build authority, you need stay focused on your topic. And big part of it is content. Content did in the past and will rule SEO in future. Since, you cannot be an expert in all subjects, you might see many specialized SEO agencies growing up (in fact it already did), e.g. Legal SEO, Automotive SEO, Real Estate SEO, and many more.
We are also seeing early evolutionary shift of Semantic SEO. Whether or not LSI exists, Google and/or other search engines are steadily evolving to understand the relationship between keywords. So, if a page talking about Obama, it will also pass link juice for White House. In future, I hope to see more artificial intelligence in work.
User intent is something that I think Google will improve on. Bayesian Filter is used for spam emails to understand which stuffs are good and which are spam from the behavior of the user. Definition of spam is also unique from person to person. Ladies fashion may be spam to males and major league games to females. And in very recent future we might see something similar to Bayesian Filter in place that understands the user intent. So, when 2 people are searching the same keyword, e.g. Notepad, one will see the Stationary Notepad and the other will see Electronic Notepads.
