Background information:
As stated on the Department of Corrections website, inspectors maintain a 10-weekly cycle of formal prison visits in addition to unannounced visits. This means the inspectors carry out between 90 and 120 site visits a year.
Inspectors undertake around 20 full investigations relating to the safe, fair and humane treatment of inmates per year. They also monitor the progress and outcomes of a further 60 or so internal prison investigations.
Andy Fitzharris is Chief Inspector. Fitzharris began his Corrections career more than 40 years ago - in 1974.
Inspectors operate under the Corrections Act 2004, the Corrections Regulations 2005 and the mandate of the Chief Executive. This mandate means inspectors check and report on the fair, safe, secure and humane treatment of prisoners and people detained within the Corrections system.
Inspectors of Corrections report directly to the chief executive and are independent from prison operational management and community probation management.
