PREMIERE: THE WLDLFE Reps The Midwest with Alt-Pop Banger “Headache”
THE WLDLFE is back with smash single “Headache,” confirming our suspicions that the Midwest is rich with up and coming musicians. Self-described as “maximalist,” THE WLDLFE has an alt-indie sound packed full of striking lyrics and decadent instrumentation.
They emerged in 2016 with their New EP, which got major buzz and contains their most popular song to date, “Waterfalls.” They’ve opened for COIN, a OTW fave, and are set to open for Halsey this month in Indianapolis on her Hopeless Fountain Kingdom tour before headlining their first show alone. They’ve also got a Billboard feature for their addicting “Towel” music video, which is endearingly honest and distinctly visual. These guys clearly don’t need vowels in their name to be successful.
“Headache” is the first single off their forthcoming album, and it’s a head turner. The lyrics are straightforward and singable, describing a frustrating a lack of trust in a relationship and asking if it’s even worth the headache. Pulsing synths and cascading bass cushion the lyrics,
“Why you always questioning me about what I’ve been doing lately? I think it’s time you finally trust me for once in your life.”
Variations in the rhythm are intricate, and the single is loaded with anticipated drops and unexpected turns. The vocals of frontman Jansen Hogan are effortless in themselves, but the electropop effects used on his voice make them pure nectar to the ear. The band touches on their recent single and the music that influences them, saying
"‘Headache’ is one of our most unique records and we think that is why it is one of our favorites. It dives into some deeper aspects of our R&B influences. We felt like it was a risky song off the bat but the finished product was everything we hoped for and more.”
THE WLDLFE has been at the forefront of establishing Indianapolis as a music hub, and they’re representing where they came from in a wildly positive way. Stay tuned for their full album on August 31, and check them out at The Deluxe this fall if you’re feeling a roadtrip to Indianapolis.
