I’m still having feelings about the end of season 2 of The Worst Witch. This is mostly dramatic flailing about feelings so I’ve put it under a cut.

The most heartbreaking Hackle moment of The Big Freeze is not the look on Hecate’s face when she realizes that Ada and the girls are going to sacrifice themselves to send her to help Mildred, it’s the moment when she freezes in the tower and Ada’s already frozen in the potions lab, and they each have two frozen girls with them, and it feels like the end and they’re both trapped, as far away from each other as they could be in the castle. And you know this can’t be the end, that the show wouldn’t do this, and that obviously Mildred has to save the day, but there’s the quiet, still moment where everyone is frozen and the snow is falling and it feels like everything is lost.

It’s also interesting to me how quickly Enid and Maud pick up on where Ada’s going with her though about sending the most useful person to Mildred. They immediately know she means Hecate and I think Hecate either doesn’t pick it up quite as quickly or else she does but she doesn’t want that to be what Ada is going to say because she doesn’t want to leave Ada (and the girls).

Ada’s face when she realized the girls had frozen and she had not yet just about killed me. Then when she starts telling them the story about when she was a girl, building snow castles, that was it. Major kudos for Clare Higgins for her acting in that scene, I was about this far away from sobbing my way through the end of the episode. She’s all alone and she’s still trying to comfort them and she’s just waiting to freeze, basically, and how dare you, Worst Witch writers and Clare Higgins, how dare you.

I’ve been staring, starry-eyed, at this for an hour.

I would tie the braid into my own hair, rest the crown upon my head, and curl up with you to drink the champagne in the light of sunshine that won’t burn me to a crisp. ♥

I want to talk about Cap 3

but I’m not sure where to start

because ugh my heart

I mean, I could start at the end, with Bucky going into cryo, and how it felt empowering to choose, even if that choice was silence. (for now)

(Also how much do I love T’Challa. So much. UGH MY HEART. (I’m going to be saying that a lot, clearly.) sorrynotsorry.)

I could start at the beginning, as Cap as the leader of his Avengers, a group that clearly works and talks and values each other and is actually a team, not just people thrown together. 

(I could point out that Wanda never does anything with her telepathy, that no one ever even mentions it, that it is not a part of that honed and practiced well-oiled machine of the Avengers in action, that no one considers it as a way to stop the people they’re chasing. 

Even after things go wrong, no one plans to use it. Even when she is reclaiming her mastery over her powers, reclaiming her choice to fight rather than to hide, she only uses her telekinesis.)

I could talk about Peggy, and that wonderful rooted tree speech they gave her, even second hand.

I could talk about how finding her and reaching for her was how Steve pulled himself into the modern day, but losing her was what finally let himself lay the past to rest and live in the modern day.

(Let’s not talk about Sharon, because man that kiss was terrible and awkward and poorly time and badly framed. I like her still, but damn. So clumsy.)

I could talk about how important it is that a Captain America movie almost felt like an Avengers movie because it’s all about people, not rules or goals or institutions, and the people in Steve’s life have expanded more than I think he ever would have imagined was possible when he was sickly and skinny and angry.

(Not that he’s less angry. But he is a bit better at knowing what to do with it.)

I could talk about how much I love the respect shown to all those other people in his life by the narrative, not just Bucky, but Natasha and her calculations and her feelings, Sam being angry but not letting that stop him, even for a second, Vision trying to be humane, if not human. (CLINT RETIRED FOR FIVE MINUTES AND IT ALL WENT TO HELL. GDI CLINT. <3) T’Challa being driven and compassionate, no need to make it one or the other. Rhodey being guarded around everyone but Tony, give me back my Rhodey.

I could talk about poor Tony, who was right, absolutely right that things needed to change, that they needed to stand for those people they weren’t able to help, but was only wrong because it wasn’t all his fault, he didn’t need to take that all on, didn’t need to give it all up in penance.

How mad am I that they excised Pepper from Tony’s life entirely off screen. Even when he was doing better in IM3. Even when the ending of that was completely about hope and change and second chances and healing, even if Tony may never consider himself healed. Tony doesn’t trust his own judgment, he can’t, not after Ultron, and Pepper, and a lifetime of damage done to him (and by him) that never got the chance to heal. So of course he thinks someone else should reign him in. And if it had been anyone besides Ross leading the charge he might have been able to make some sort of transition for the Avengers work. 

(Because obviously being politicians’ weapons isn’t an answer either. Because obviously SHIELD and the UN task-force weren’t any more interested in the due process they were mad at the Avengers for ignoring, because no one cared about process when they had Bucky’s face in a grainy photo to blame for everything.)

The world is just scared. And honestly, considering the slew of catastrophes that have been covered by the films, I can’t blame anyone for being angry, or terrified. That doesn’t mean you should let someone attack you out of fear though.

Obviously.

(And Captain America would never let you. Never let anyone. Ever.)

I could talk about how the badguy won ... but he didn’t, not really. He shook them, surely, and the rest of the world may look and think the Avengers shattered. But Steve didn’t. He held. He might not be “Captain America” anymore, not the way he was, but he’s still Steve Rogers and he stood up, and he held.

Things fall apart, the center cannot hold ... but if it does, then things aren’t really broken. They can always be built back up again.

And that is why it was a Captain America movie, not an Avengers movie.

But I still don’t know how to talk about it.
