Let’s Talk About ✨Logos✨
Since we’re in a bit of a news lull this month after what I’d like to call the December Deluge, I wanted to take a moment to talk about something that irks me a bit (even though it probably shouldn’t) about all these new developments going on, and that is the fact that there is zero brand synergy going on with the goddamn logos. And also the new ones kinda don’t even look amazing. I know this sounds asinine to complain about and yes it is but hear me out. Note that I’m just talking about Japanese logos here since all the new stuff is so far only in Japanese.
These two are the classic logos that the series has been using since the very beginning of their respective mediums. On the left is the manga logo used since all the way back in 1999, and on the right is the 2004 anime logo. The 2004 anime kept most of the original logo intact, but removed the English and instead placed furigana over the kanji for Gunso. In case you don’t know, furigana are hiragana or katakana characters placed over kanji to help kids who don’t know a lot of kanji read words. This decision indicates the younger audience shift for the anime.
For the most part—though with a few exceptions—anything related to the manga and using Yoshizaki’s artwork has used the manga logo, and the 2004 anime and its associated multimedia and merch/collabs (which is mostly what it’s used for today) have used the 2004 anime logo. Simple, right? Naturally, the old Chou Gekijouban series of movies used a variation of the 2004 anime logo, since they’re all in the anime continuity.
Same logo, but with the movie header added to it on the medal (which also has furigana, but on the bottom).
And so along comes Movie 6, complete with a fresh new header of Shin Gekijouban, so obviously the logo was gonna be renovated. But based on everything we’ve seen, all indicators point to it being in the 2004 anime continuity. They’re even showing off the poster at the rerun of the Super Gerogero Exhibition (remember that? The one with the freaky AR chatbots they only did once and never again?) just held in Yokohama at the time of writing, which is all about the 2004 anime. So the new logo can’t look that different from all the 2004-associated ones, right?
Oh what the heck.
I’m gonna be honest y’all it’s a little ugly. I get they wanted to do the gold plating and fancier kanji because it’s a super special anniversary thing but they couldn’t have made the bubbles with “Gekijouban” any nicer? I get why they’re positioned there (the subtitle takes up a lot of horizontal stacking real estate) but the black and white totally doesn’t fit with the flashier rest of the logo. More perplexingly, despite being associated with the 2004 anime, there’s no furigana here at all. Is this like, a tonal shift indicator? Are we abandoning the children? I mean I guess this movie is primarily for people in their mid-20s with frog yaoi itabags so sure whatever. (Not knocking on those kinds of people btw I would be one myself if I wasn’t easily embarrassed. That’s just what the main fanbase is since kids don’t rly know it anymore lol.) It’s still kinda jarring considering it’s the only logo in use that looks anything like this.
And then we get to the second tentpole (well third revealed but this is bigger than the remaining one) of the big anniversary project, the reboot. Admittedly, despite my complaint that there’s too many conflicting logos, it does make sense for this one to be different since it is…well, a reboot. But also the angle they took with it is weird.
Okay, so, right off the bat this seems to be way closer to the manga logo than the anime logo, especially with the English on the bottom in a very similar if not the same font (probably should’ve always been positioned there in the manga ver too but whatever). It also looks kinda janky how the star symbol keeps the traditional yellow with a blue outline but the “Keroro” part has a green outline now. Like, I think it would’ve been better to make the star’s outline green too if you want to give it a completely updated look. But the part I’m most petty about is how instead of hiragana, they used katakana over the “Gunso” part. Katakana is primarily used for loan words from other languages, but it’s also got a few stylistic uses in media. In this case it seems like they do it literally just to be special because none of the existing logos have it. Are you trying to invoke previous iterations of the franchise or not guys pick a lane. Or is this an indication that the reboot itself is gonna be some kind of mish-mash rather than a straight manga adaptation or a retread of the original anime with slight tweaks. If that’s the case they still could’ve made it look better like damn.
So now we get to the musical, which you think would also have a completely new logo of some sort, but…
Iiiit’s just the old anime logo. Okay. So does this mean it’s set in the old anime continuity? That’s not a guarantee since the movie also seems to be that way and is noticeably pretty different. Did they just not feel like making a new one? I guess this is the least important of the three projects but still. This is where my point about the brand synergy really comes in, because it’s just inconsistent what’s associated with what and who everything is really for. Does this make any sense. Probably not.
Anyway, that’s just my thoughts on how the new logos look (not that good lol) and how they make the whole rollout of this coordinated new multimedia thing just a little bit odder. Ultimately this is probably inconsequential I just need something to post about this month and this is what’s been rattling around in the back of my head because I am fastidious and weird. Carry on.
unfortunately a lot of people seem to assume that If I Get Overwhelmed im obviously not having fun or actually want to be there and get weird with me about it. no im just overwhelmed and need to pull back a bit i am still having fun and want to be here!!!!
Sorry boss i can't come into work today. Yeah downloaded a virus on my brain. Yeah. Yeah I can't see there's pop-ups all over my vision.

alphonse is objectively very good at being a little brother and i’d say so is ed at being a big brother but like. the main difference is that ed is actively Trying to get a good grade in big brothering and thinks he’s not good enough whereas i don’t think alphonse thinks about it like that
