Why did Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters have such inconsistent animation?
Today I'm going to talk about why Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters was so inconsistent when it came to its animation. Most anime, even at that time, stuck to one style and didn't change in every episode. Well this happens so frequently in Yu-Gi-Oh! because there was no Chief Animation Director. What is that you ask?
Well, according to Sakuga, a Chief AD is an overall credit that tends to be in the hands of the character designer. Their job is to ensure the characters look like they’re supposed to. Moreso than the regular animation directors, their job is to ensure the characters look like they’re supposed to. Consistency is their goal, which they will enforce as much as they want (and can). As you can understand, the existence of a Chief Animation Director is rather important for the visual consistency of the entire show. Without one, the individual ADs had too much of an influence on the character design.
