In the 1960s, Mandela was involved in a protest that turned violent rather quickly. People were scared and hurt with many detained- Mandela being one of them. As a result of the massacre, ANC had been banned in a state of emergency and the government of South Africa implemented more ways to keep people in check. As Mandela was arrested in 1962 and jailed, around the world people became more aware. Protests throughout the nations were made into festivals where people held up signs and gathered to show support for his release. Even after Mandela was released, Global Citizen continued their festivals in honor to him.

Mandela died on December 5th in Johannesburg at the age of 95. The results of his death were felt around the world as people mourned for him. This death sparked more controversy though from conspiracy theories. Overall, the death was also sparking anger as South Africa said they would not be releasing photos of Mandela but a few people sneaked in the pictures anyways of him resting. This was the first democratic election in South Africa and the fact that a man who is black was elected made him very beloved by the majority of South Africa during that time. He started by making laws and more organizations to bring about equality- making sure both sides are being punished equally and awarded equally based on their actions. Not showing contempt for the people who had hurt him.

Mandela's time in prison was a struggle, he described in Long Walk to Freedom about his hardships, the dramatic highs, and the depressing lows of his journey. In prisons there have been accounts of aborted escape plans and people coming together for a change. He had even helped the prisoners petition for pants to not only survive the long winter nights but no longer allow the prisoners to be shamed. Even got a tennis court to be placed.

His time in prison had him changing to different facilities. As the facilities changed, so did the visitors. Many diplomats and presidents began to take notice and played a part to Freeing Mandela.
