Nelson Mandela in 1962. Mandela, (affectionately later known as "Madiba", his Xhosa clan name) was initially a lawyer-turned-activist.
He fought against the extreme racist apartheid regime ruled by the White Dutch settlers (AKA 'Afrikaners') of South Africa. He was subsequently jailed for 27 years for his activism.
Mandela later became the first Black President of South Africa in 1994.
