Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot and healthcare executive, has won the Democratic primary in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, NBC News projects, setting up a general election campaign against Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr.

Bennett defeated physician Tina Shah, former Small Business Administration official Michael Roth, and business owner Brian Varela for the Democratic nomination. Now, she will take on Kean in a district that President Donald Trump carried by just 1 percentage point in 2024, making it one of the most tightly divided districts in the country.

GOP challenger Steve Toth ousts Rep. Dan Crenshaw in Texas primary

U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw of Texas has lost his reelection bid in a GOP primary election to a conservative state lawmaker from Conroe.

Republican challenger Steve Toth defeated U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw on Tuesday night, ousting the only House Republican in Texas who President Donald Trump didn’t endorse heading into the nation’s first big primary of 2026.

Crenshaw, a former Navy SEAL whose independent streak sometimes clashed with fellow Republicans, spent the primary trying to fend off attacks from the party’s hard right that he was not in step with Trump’s agenda.

Toth, a state representative and member of the GOP’s hard-right caucus in the Legislature, picked up a big endorsement late in the primary from Republican Sen. Ted Cruz.

“This campaign has been a referendum on representatives who campaign one way and govern another, and the people have spoken,” Toth said in a statement after his victory.

Crenshaw, who lost his right eye when he was hit with an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan in 2012, had clashed with Cruz over the senator’s support of Trump’s unfounded claim that he won the 2020 presidential election.

Democrat edges out incumbent Florida Republican in new poll

A new poll showed a House Republican in Florida trailing a potential Democratic rival in a district Trump won by double-digits last year.

A new poll from Kaplan Strategies regarding Florida's 27th Congressional District showed GOP Representative Maria Elvira Salazar trailing a potential Democratic rival ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Why It Matters

Democrats are hoping to retake control of the U.S. House of Representatives in next year's midterm elections. Historically, the party outside of the White House performs well in the midterms, fueling Democratic optimism about a 2018-style blue wave.

Florida's 27th Congressional District, which Salazar represents, has not been viewed as particularly competitive, but the latest survey of the race suggests Miami Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava could put the congresswoman in a close race if she chooses to run. The district contains areas around Miami.

It's one of the heavily Latino districts that has shifted rightward in recent elections. Democrats' performance in the district and others like it will be a key test about whether they are able to win back support from Latino voters who once backed Democrats but supported President Donald Trump last November.
