Connect
OK. While I'm on the topic of jobs here, y'know how you can connect to some sites with your Facebook account (Facebook Connect) or Google, or Twitter? Click the link and then a little window pops up asking you if it's OK for Facebook or Twitter or Google to link the account, then you click in the affirmative and boom the account is created on the new site. You can do this with LinkedIn, too, did you know that? So instead of creating a new login for every fucking job site I visit, I could just use LinkedIn Connect or whatever and manage everything from one place. You could use that to fill in required fields, make finding me on LinkedIn even easier, and also automagically upload my resume! SO WHY DON'T MORE SITES DO THIS?! It would make managing what sites I have an account on so much easier, and I could disconnect or reconnect sites as I need them from ONE CONVENIENT PLACE, as well as not have to remember eleventy billion different usernames and passwords, not to mention have those passwords EMAILED to me in PLAINTEXT by some sort of fucking savage who's never even heard of online security. Do you know how many jobs-based sites I'm signed up for? Because at this point I fucking don't. I think its up somewhere around 20. There's the core job sites like Indeed and Monster and Workopolis. Then there's the fringe sites that are set up on a per-company basis like Taleo and Staffclick. Then there's ones that the company purchases rights to use for the duration of their hire period. Then there's the homebrew ones that the company has their fucking web interns set up (I'm looking at you, Brassring). Beyond the major job seeking sites, there is no reason for these other fringe sites to exist, let alone require a unique username and password for the experience (which is always, ALWAYS mediocre at best, and fucking awful at worst) when they can simply just allow users to link to their LinkedIn. I'm just so pissed off that shit like this continues to occur when there is no need from a design standpoint, not to mention an ease-of-use standpoint. The APIs are readily available for use from any major social networking site to apply them for your needs. Setting up yet another account just so you can collect a fucking resume is ludicrous. The major sites (Indeed, Monster, Workopolis) allow employers to collect cover letters and CVs with the click of a button, and the review process can begin almost immediately. Hell, you can even populate a database with what Indeed or Monster or Workopolis sends you. So why do I need to sign up for yet another site just to submit one resume? If I were employed at these places, they would want me to use any and all tools at my disposal to get the job done and done well. These web devs have the finest tools made with the finest metals and designed by the finest tool makers, and they're still swinging a 20-lb sledge around like a fucking neanderthal.
I am so fucking sick of poor user experiences I could puke. It’s disgusting.
