Independent project - final film
After experimenting with sound, I decided that I wanted to create a narrative using solely audio and a few shots from my twiglet forest set. I thought about the type of narrative I could create using a forest, a car and the person driving the car. I also didn’t want to make the film too long. I decided that I would use the shots of my forest set as context for the narrative, and the rest of the film would be in darkness with the audio telling the story.
I thought that a simple, yet eerie story would be a narrative that hints at the idea of someone driving into the forest at night, dumping something (someone?), then quickly driving away again. I found a royalty-free sound website (freesound.org) and searched around for relevant sound effects. I decided that these were the sounds that I would need to tell the story successfully:
A car driving, slowing down, then stopping
A handbreak/ something to indicate the car has stopped
Rustling/ unzipping a bag
A large thud or the sound of someone dumping something heavy
Footsteps/ running for a few seconds
The car door slamming again, and the engine coming on
A car driving away into the distance
Although I spent a few hours looking for the best sound effects, I think it all came together really well in the end. I think that the combination of my handmade forest set, the lighting, and the audio all combined successfully to create a mysterious, isolated atmosphere which hints at a dark narrative. This project has ended up nowhere near where I had anticipated it to be a few weeks ago, but I am really happy with my experimental process and outcome.
