Inder Salim's We are all Women's issues (2003)
(Earth.Territory.Music. Work overview in photography and text, 2000-2014)
Selected by Melissa García Aguirre
"In all sincerity, I chose this piece because it documents a male addressing women’s issues. I am very moved by his gesture, and it has made me further reflect on gender limits."

Born in Kashmir in the early 1960’s, Inder Salim has been producing conceptual and performance-based work in India for over 25 years. An interdisciplinary artist, he mixes poetry, photography, video, Internet interfaces and bodily interventions to push cultural boundaries and aesthetic norms. He is one of the mentors of the City-as-Studio program at Sarai/CSDS and is presently organizing Harkat@Sarai, a series of open-ended performance art events.
In 2010 he organized Art Karavan International, an international event that traveled through nine cities in the north, with 30 participants from India and abroad. Salim initially came up with the idea of working and developing new processes with artists and non-artists during this event. How do we make sense of the act that makes a performance? How do acts grow within the performer and around the performance? These are the questions that inspire Salim to conduct his periodical workshops, which result in site-specific works aimed at evolving imaginative processes open to the people.
Salim has foregrounded the role of art as activism in India. His work emphasizes society’s injustices and comments on the social environment that the artist encounters in his country. The artist intends the viewer to become acutely aware of how one’s surroundings function on a daily basis, and often places himself in the role of a humble servant to protest against inequality. In his performance We are all Women’s issues (2003), he wore the sentence painted on the back of his coat during a public intervention.
The documentation of this performance is part of a comprehensive work overview which includes a selection of some of Salim’s most striking activities in the last decade.
