Present day Kadambur is divided into 2 villages - Melkadambur and Keezhkadambur (roughly translated as upper and lower).
Ancient Kadambur was ruled by the Sambuvarayar Kings. Sambuvarayar Kings ruled Thondaimandalam that in present day consists of Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Kanchipuram, Cuddalore, Thiruvallur, Nellore and Chithoor. Padaiveedu was their capital. They were vassal reigns under the Chola Kings Rajadhiraja Chola II and Kulathonga Chola III.
Chieftains of Sambuvarayar clan were Saivites that considers Lord Shiva the supreme being. It was said that during their period, they built 1008 temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and 108 temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Of over 1000 temples, only 20 or so remain. Rest of them were destroyed when succession took place first by Vijayanagara Kings and rest that followed
