8th March 1885 Major General Edward Sargent died at his home in Dublin at the age of 60. Sargent had served in the 18th Royal Irish in his early career, fighting in China, Burma, Crimea and in the Indian Mutiny with the Regiment. He was acting battalion commander when the 1st Battalion left India for the UK in 1866. The photo was taken in the Crimea in 1856.
