There have been quite a few releases in the last two weeks, haven’t there? Unless I sit in front of my computer all day, sometimes it’s hard to keep up. I think I managed fairly well lately, but let’s blame the weather.
One of the best new discoveries of the past few weeks has been Matt Bouvier. He has been a member of several bands, such as Stars in Coma and currently playing with The Flatmates, but I had never heard any of his solo work until the release of Death & Love this week. What a pleasant surprise!
There is something about these homespun-sounding tracks that is entirely enjoyable, accumulating in six well-balanced pop songs. As his bandcamp suggests, these songs focus on the “strong feelings and the dark corners of life with simple instrumentation,” just as the title of the album would suggest.
You can order a homemade CD from one of the most underrated labels I can think of, Small Bear Records. And, if you’re in Europe, be aware that Matt is one of the organizers behind the Indiefjord festival in Norway. He’ll be playing at the festival, too!
