The land acknowledgement comic i did for this weeks vanCAF online programming. You can check out the vanCAF youtube here for my and Cole Pauls talk about our work as Indigenous folk in illustration, about land acknowledgements, the Wet’suwet’en Solidarity actions, our favourite horror manga and why I love the colour pink. Honestly it’s one of my favourite art-work-friend chats from this last year! Cole did the land acknowledgement with Cease Wyss for last years event and is also just a really rad dood who lends me his most treasured comic books. Oh, and uh, if you somehow haven’t read it already, Cole the author of Dakwäkãda Warriors, a sci-fi language revitalization extravaganza of cyber-sasquatches, mecha and defending against colonial empires! Special thanks to Kwiigay Iiwaans for helping out with the script on this comic for this year! Go check out their music! And whenever it’s safe again and if you’re around the territories, hit them up for some tattooing! Hopefully we’ll all see you next year!
Native Realities produces and distributes graphic novels and comics created for, and by, indigenous peoples around the world.
Due to the inherent visual nature of these books, it’s a perfect medium to subvert and complicate the typical representation of Native peoples.
Gord Hill | 500 Years of Resistance. 2010
Gord Hill is a social activist, carver, comics artist and illustrator. Hill creates work that carries stories and messages for revolution, justice and chronicles the struggle our ancestor's have made against racism, capitalism, imperialism and genocide to retain our unique aboriginal cultures. Gord Hill’s work is powerful and is clearly and sharply political messaging, even in his traditional work Hill approached with an understanding of the political history and suppression of Northwest Coast Art and the sacrifice and strength of the people who maintained arts and culture as subversive to the dominant culture. Hill’s current work chronicles 500 years of Indigenous Resistance in the form of a comic book. Gord Hill tries to ignite the warrior spirit through his artwork.
Salmon Journeys, for Comics In Transit, organized by Cloudscape Comics, 2019 was (is still?) up on the 53rd and Victoria transit shelter in so-called vancouver, bc ie. the traditional territories of the Coast Salish people, including the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh.
