To anyone trying to reconnect with their ancestral heritage and culture: please don't feel ashamed for not knowing things or for not learning "fast enough". It's big work, and you will invariably always find more information, nuance, and stories among your people. I don't think I'll ever stop, even after I'm lnui'site'waq and know all the stories and history I can find. Our cultures are alive and growing and adapting, as all cultures do.

To anyone interacting with someone trying to reconnect with their ancestral heritage and culture: please don't shame or tease or make fun of people trying. Unlike the ancestors of we who are disconnected, we are not hiding or spurning who we are anymore. I understand my ancestors reasons, and I do not fault them for it. Regardless of that, isn't it a joyful thing to see our communities reconnect? To see lost cousins found? The see languages revived? To see knowledge kept alive? To see how we'll grow into the future?

Who controls our city parks?

We like to think of our city parks as “natural oases” and public places where we are free to do as we please. But, the reality is that they are tightly controlled spaces that are as planned and regulated as the roads and public buildings around us.

Amidst the COVID-19 emergency, I was able to finish reading On This Patch of Grass and writing about it on Park People. The book by the Hern-Couture family explores the question of ownership and enjoyment of Canada’s city parks.

It poses challenging questions, such as whether city parks are really designed for everyone and how we can address complicated issues around park ownership and management while trying to achieve reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. Each author of the Hern-Couture family seeks to answer these questions by examining them through the lens of their neighbourhood park. According to the authors:

“Like every park, Victoria Park contains so many stories, so much history, so many relationships…it is a vehicle for thinking about land occupation, the history of Vancouver, the uses of urban parks, and their quasi-spiritual claims to the natural world.”

Reconciliation needs to look like an *effort* to repair the damages done to the land and peoples of Canada. Land restoration and preservation should be emphasised, and damaged ecosystems should be rebuilt. Fat chance of Canada doing that, though.

How Vancouver is leading the way with Indigenous reconciliation

In the lead up to Park People’s national conference, Heart of the City, taking place in Montreal, June 12-14, 2019 , I wrote a piece interviewing their keynote speaker, Rena Soutar, to learn more about how Vancouver is leading the way in reconciliation with local Indigenous peoples. Rena Soutar is the first Reconciliation Planner at Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation:

For 3,000 years, Indigenous peoples lived on a densely forested peninsula overlooking the Salish Sea in what is now called Stanley Park. It was home to the Tsleil-Waututh, Squamish and Musqueam peoples, and there was a village onsite called Xwayxway, where potlatches were held as late as 1875. Today, Vancouver’s largest iconic park holds little trace of its Indigenous ancestry.

Following the land’s official designation as Stanley Park in 1886, most Indigenous inhabitants were removed without remuneration. This displacement took place in parks across the city. According to the Vancouver Park Board:

“One of the core acts of colonialism is the removal of entire communities from their ancestral homes. This has been undertaken by the Park Board since its inception—beginning with the declaration of jurisdiction over ‘Stanley Park’, as well as beach areas around the City.”

The Vancouver Park Board is trying to address these past wrongs. Reconciliation is the goal. It means something unique to everyone, but ultimately it involves building a new relationship between Canadian society and Indigenous peoples.
