It's October 10th, 🛶 Indigenous Peoples Day in the USA.

– On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the sovereignty, resilience, and immense contributions that Native Americans have made to the world; and we recommit to upholding our solemn trust and treaty responsibilities to Tribal Nations, strengthening our Nation-to-Nation ties.

– For centuries, Indigenous Peoples were forcibly removed from ancestral lands, displaced, assimilated, and banned from worshiping or performing many sacred ceremonies. Yet today, they remain some of our greatest environmental stewards.… Native peoples challenge us to confront our past and do better, and their contributions to scholarship, law, the arts, public service, and more continue to guide us forward….

– NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim October 10, 2022, as Indigenous Peoples Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities. I also direct that the flag of the United States be displayed on all public buildings on the appointed day in honor of our diverse history and the Indigenous Peoples who contribute to shaping this Nation…. Phyllis Webstad was 6 years old when the new orange shirt she chose for her 1st day of school was stripped off her back. It was the early 70s & she was the 3rd generation to attend St. Joseph's Residential School in Williams Lake, BC. Today is Orange Shirt Day to acknowledge the harm that Canada's residential school system left in generations of Onkwehón:we families and communities.

Katherine Sorbey, who played my Nokumi (grandmother) in Rhymes for Young Ghouls is a residential school survivor. I'm dedicating this day to her, to my ancestors and every other family who was impacted by this genocidal system.

So instead of adorning my blog with anything stars and stripes-related, I decided to instead fill it (and your dash) with indigenous people and their brilliance and beauty. This is their land, not the colonizers. If anything, we should be treating them with nothing but respect.

The old people came literally to love the soil and they would sit or recline on the ground with a feeling of being close to a mothering power… The soil was soothing, strengthening, cleansing, and healing...

If you are stressed, go to a spot on the Earth, sit down, and put your fingers and toes in the dirt. You can even wash your hands in the soil. When you touch it, notice what it does to your hands. Our bodies love to touch the Earth. Sometimes we get too busy and forget these simple things. Maybe you’ll even want to plant a garden or flowers. These things are mentally healthy. Great Spirit, today remind me touch Mother Earth so that She can touch me.

I just came across this today. I encourage you to listen and not to give up nor forget the fight of those who came before us, the descendants of those who still live here today. I'd suggest listening to more of Arise Roots music. I'd also encourage you, no matter your ethnicity, to divest from those who destroy and harm whatever or whoever gets in their way. (Chase bank is a huge investor in pipelines and Energy Transfer). You still can help fight the pipeline, you can still help by divesting, by donating to legal funds, to taking a stand against indigenous exploitation and violence. Someone needs to tell me why wanting clean drinking water makes you an activist and, and why proposing to destroy water with chemical warfare doesn't make you a terrorist.
