Indigo Hamlet: a deep-blue serranid with light-blue bands

The “Indigo Hamlet” is a visually distinctive serranid known for its deep-blue coloring and light-blue vertical banding. The species stands out for the contrast of its body color against the thinner, vertical striping that gives it a bold, high-visibility look in the water. One of my favorite fish that I had the pleasure of seeing off the coast of Maya Key, Honduras, this beautiful black and blue fish is known as the Hypoplectrus indigo, or the Indigo Hamlet. These fish stick to the reef bottom and can grow up 5 inches long, and can be found throughout the Western Central Atlantic.
