Hullo!

I’m seven-gill (or 7gill). I’m also known as MelonHarvest on DeviantArt (https://www.deviantart.com/melonharvest).

Any pronouns.

Why seven-gill? It’s a type of shark! Specifically the Broadnose sevengill shark (Notorynchus cepedianus).

This blog is primarily dedicated to my artwork, so I don’t plan on reblogging anything barring a few exceptions. If you wanna see stuff I think is cool, check out my likes page. 

I post whatever, whenever, although currently my main output is fanart for the YA fantasy series Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland. 

I’m also into marine life and the ocean as a whole. I have a list where I curate interesting aquatic (or semi-aquatic) organisms, so if there’s one you’d like to share, PLEASE DO!!! I want to see them so badly, even if it’s already on my list. I’d type out my other interests, but you can probably gauge them from my posts/likes.

Still chipping away at a Tsunami design I’m happy with. And her boyfriend’s here, too (and a smaller, earlier conceptual version of him). They’re a little too similar looking for my liking, so I’ll probably revisit Riptide and sharpen him up. I had another design for him I had forgotten about so I’ll probably merge the two.

Trying to lean into the “flowy” design motif for Tsunami, so her linework is supposed to be swept back and smooth. Riptide is supposed to have more of a jagged feel (riptide just feels like a jagged word to me), but he still has some friendly roundness to him. In the future, I want to make his horns sharper and his ‘hair’ a little more loose and playful looking. Yes, I did give him a little eyebrow notch.

Send me pictures of sharks and I’ll (attempt) to identify them. Ideally I’ll narrow it down to a species, but a broader classification may have to suffice.

I’ve been debating setting up a side-blog where I do this exact thing since the other blogs with this premise have…left a lot to be desired. I’m no expert by any means, but it’s within my interest to improve my IDing skills and the language required for it. There’s a whole lotta variety when it comes to sharks and I’d love to showcase some of that.

This has been bugging me endlessly because I havent seen a correct ID for these two (if there was, like I said, I haven’t see it), so here is my attempt and explanation.

**I may be wrong. Please correct me if I am. I am happy to discuss it**

The top image is of a Caribbean Reef Shark (Carcharhinus perezi). I’m suggesting this because the image can be found on the Wikipedia page for Reef Sharks and is labeled as a Caribbean. I know Wikipedia should be taken with a grain of salt, and there’s a possibility it could be another species of reef shark (such as a Grey Reef) but it’s some kind of “reef shark” and not a Bull Shark (Carcharhinus leucas) as I’ve seen some other blogs call it. It can be easy to confuse the two, especially since both belong to the same genus and occupy the same habitat, but Bulls are much stockier and the dorsal fin has a more pronounced pointier triangular appearance. The difference is a little more noticeable when you compare the two side by side. I like to think of Bulls as reef sharks who’ve been stung by a bee.

The bottom image is of a Bluntnose Sixgill Shark (Hexanchoid griseus). It’s large bodied with a blunt snout and has only one dorsal fin situated roughly over the pelvic fins. It also lacks any obvious freckling or dark coloration that I’d normally associate with say, a Broadnose Sevengill (Notorynchus cepedianus)

Sixgills have a sloping back, a bit of a “googly eye”-ed appearance with their large green eyes, and kinda look like they’re smiling. Sevengills have flatter backs, cat-like eyes, and look like they’re grimacing. Also, the number of gill slits.

You can actually view the original video this still was taken from which can give you a better idea of what this shark looks like in its entirety. He sure loves those fucking cables.

Im sure this has been talked about about before but with the invention of pasta salad, fruit salad, potato salad ect comes the implication that if you put at least two similar ingredients chopped up in a bowl and add some kind of dressing or binding agent that it is now a salad, though the official definition does not account for non vegetable salads

I used to use this definition as a kid to put two types of chocolate in a bowl and say i was eating a chocolate salad, if i were to melt some more chocolate together and add it to the top like a dressing would this meet the criteria of a salad?

Before you say salads are meant to be healthy, fruit salad while having fruit is often covered in a mixture with maple syrup, syrup and sometimes cool whip so while the fruit part is healthy, the whole thing is dubious

But if you insist on at least some part being healthy, chocolate, especially dark chocolate, has lots of antioxidants that are good for your heart and brain function

So if i chopped up different types of chocolate and then made a dressing of different melted chocolate to put on top would this be considered a salad
