INDIGO | FIRST LISTEN - FIRST MEMORIES
I decided to make a new approach this time and I wrote down my thoughts during first listen and then added it for better reading. It’s such an beautiful album, full of so many beautiful emotions - whether they are easy or intriquate listening. Where Namjoon shares with us his coming of age young adulthood to the next chapter. And the progression between jazz, ballad, experimentation and his love for hip hop shines through.
my gender is ‘the boy in every björk love song’
Indigo
So, I have seen some people on Twitter be all nasty about Namjoon choosing to do the intimate 200-people show in Seoul, but I would like to defend it if you indulge me.
From what RM has shared, it's pretty clear "INDIGO” will be quite an intimate album. Whatever moods he will project on it - from the comfort of mono to the frustrations for him as an artist during the pandemic or with the politicians using them as their own tools, to the happiness from having his dream career, brilliant members as friends and anything else, but also sadness and longing of crossing to the next decade. With the military waiting for Joon and many things on his mind, he will share a lot with us on his ground. And we need to respect it.
Doing something like that, his first studio album, his closing of one chapter of his life, it's all very conceptual. And intimate shows are something extraordinary, especially if you are an artist of this calibre. So it just adds to the idea of exactly how powerfully open dialogue Indigo will give.
I understand the frustration of fans. Listen, I know it more than most. I have been their fan since 2013; I was betrayed during the Wings tour by my friend, scammed during the LY tour, left ticketless during Speak Yourself and then ultimately left heartbroken during the MOTS tour. So I understand the frustration of "why it's only Korean, Japanese and US fans".
But ultimately, this is Namjoon's artistic decision, which many artists have made before him. It's common for MTV to release whole sets of live CDs & DVDs from them. Whether you thought of Nirvana, Florence + The Machines or Pearl Jam back in 1992, shows like this are unique, and HYBE would be honestly dumb if they did not share that moment the same way MTV Unplugged does, but they have been dumb before.
Your love for an artist should not be fuelled by anger or jealousy. Then it's not support. Unfortunately, that line can easily skip over to criticism that is not fully grounded by anything else but your own selfish needs, as genuine as they may seem to you.
I would give next to anything to see them live, to have that moment where I am surrounded by their music and their energy, but am I going to disregard their artistic decisions or criticise them for having vision over presenting their music? So in this particular case, no, no, I won't.
I have a digital art competition in 15 mins wish me luck haha
I - DEAL INDIGO
IDEAL
Such perfection of excellence constantly changes over time in which we live. I love the first letter of this acronym because what is ideal in music? I don't think it exists, it's open to interpretation and yet we can feel bound by it. But RM? He will set that ideal for us.
Looking at the indigo ideal
On one hand it's an ancient dye that was used for silk, very smooth hue for royal material. On the other, you have the modern indigo, rough and used typically on denim. Which can easily apply to classes - silk marking the success, denim marking where it came from but also the person RM is underneath the silk of performance.
That is RM looking for ideal in music right there, don't you think? Comforting and Confronting, the two sides of his music and of this impact through it. An ideal combination.
Two sides of his ideal indigo are just like the deep hues of indigo itself, this album too will have many layers to it. A spectrum that combines the old and the new, coming from ancient times from the smoothness of silk to the roughness of denim. That spectrum in his music form? Spectacular.
