Made an anime friendly version of this meme. Happy release day! :)
[Image ID: A "breaking down the media in to reactions by section" meme about Witch Hat Atelier that has been edited. Past the initial responses of "This is the most beautiful manga I have ever seen" and "Oh, no! Girls, watch out!" the rest of the meme has been colored over and labeled "Don't worry about it". One can only partially see "Jesus fucking christ what" at the very bottom. Overlaying text reads "Happy Witch Hat Atelier anime release. Everyone watch Witch Hat Atelier". End ID] by @thelightfluxtastic

i hate when rich people condescend with the whole 'money can't buy happiness' argument like listen. just because buying your fourth car didn't fill the void in your deluded disconnected-from-reality life doesn't mean not having to worry about food/ bills/medicine wouldn't greatly improve the mental health of literally everyone else on the planet
Fun fact: they've done studies and money DOES buy happiness, but it tops out after a certain amount (nowadays around $500,000)
So yeah, having food / bills / medicine & a fair amount of leisure covered by income DOES buy happiness, but excess wealth depletes the effect exponentially.
And the "money doesn't buy happiness" thing is supposed to be AIMED AT RICH PEOPLE
Because the whole fucking point of it is that you're not gonna be any goddamn happier with ANOTHER million dollars
Fucking idiots
Now that I have come across a number of female characters in various genres, I think I understand why Maomao appeals to one as an exceptionally well-written FMC (I would in fact say not only FMC, but exceptionally well-written Main Character). I definitely not mean it in a 'she is not like other girls' way, oh definitely not that. IMO Maomao makes Intelligence look entertaining—and exceptionally common-place once you understand the logic. Let me explain this a bit. Usually, born genuis characters play a lot on dumbing down the surroundings, their intelligence has to shine through the collective stupidity of circumstances and their smartness usually needs audience to treat this aspect of them in a theatrical context. Like their intelligence would be revealed in some visually disarming way and more or less, audience will chuckle how dumb they have been about not noticing the clues or patterns earlier.
However, Maomao's intelligence not only surprises the audience it makes them curious. You do not feel dumb, you feel genuinely intrigued as to how common-place everything was. Like it was always there, you just didn't notice it! But you also know you could not unless you observed it. This is one of the core strengths of Maomao's character, she doesn't just connect the dots, she makes you realise connecting the dots is a skill in itself that needs to be built upon.
She observes but she knows her intuition and observation are not enough, she needs some material proof to validate her claims. And this is very different from other depiction of intelligent characters where their intuition/observation is the material proof. Maomao doesn't work on the basis of intuition alone, she needs to look for logic of sequence. And when she points out logic of sequence, you are not only surprised, you actually learn something. And this is where most of the appeal lies— Maomao's character doesn't just treat viewers as an audience waiting for a theatrical reveal, she actually engages viewers/readers through a process of unraveling.
Maomao is a really well-written genius who portrays the intelligence of common-place wisdom well. She doesn't need to dumb down the circumstances, circumstances are the test arena. Most of things that unravel the plot or mystery hide in plain sight and originate in the common routine. She doesn't need to view common-place as a prop, common-place is the theatre where every secret and truth lurks. But she also doesn't make you feel like everyone could do it, she makes you realise observation is actually a skill and not just an innate talent— a skill that needs to be tested and upgraded from time to time. It is because everything hides in plain sight and common-place routine, you need exceptional observation skills to unearth it as you won't be able to spot the clues or patterns unless you take a pause and notice. This is what Maomao does exceptionally well— she treats intelligence more as a skill than talent, she makes it all look learn-able.
Maomao teaches, she doesn't preach.... She tells you intelligence is a skill even if you are privileged to be born with it. One way to channelize intelligence is to hone it, otherwise you run the risk of wasting it or worse misusing it. One of Maomao's biggest criticism of Lakan is that he refuses to see his intelligence and talent as a privilege and work on it. And one of Maomao's deepest ideas of Jinshi is how he underestimates his own intellect. Maomao treats intelligence as a skill-set and failure to appreciate or understand it as a skill-issue and not a marker of one's worth.
Maomao is not only teaching Jinshi the pros and cons of the herbs planted in the inner court or concubines the twisted art of intimacy, she is also showcasing the viewers/readers that intelligence is actually a product of one's constant efforts and not just a privilege.
It really is so disturbing to see a Percy Jackson without the inner monologue.
In the books, even if he was absolutely slaying, eating, serving BAMF in the middle of the fight, the book would be saying like "gosh I'm so awkward and clumsy haha who let me hold a sword lol I'm such a silly goose"
In the show we see him in pain and literally doing the most insane stuff with the most stoic facial expressions. Killing, stabbing, getting stabbed. He isn't some quirky funny kid on the outside, even if canonically on the inside he sees the world like a real kid. The show Percy seems different for these reasons but that's not OOC, that's just what Percy looks like to EVERYONE ELSE.
