20. Do you work on a single project or many at the same time? How does that work for you?
MANY! I’m doing this thing where I work on my novel for the most part and then get to write fic as a treat. I’m therefore writing whatever I want whenever I want. Which used to result in my posting wips that would get updated whenever the mood struck but that seemed to ruffle feathers around here and it wasn’t worth it. So now I just write it and don’t post it. haha
22. What is it about watching the same two idiots falling in love over and over again?
So, I know this question is meant to be about why I love these characters specifically but I’m going to give you an answer about fic in general, about stories.
When I read a novel, there has to be all this bit about who the characters are and I have to get to know them and who their extended circle are. There’s a kind of shorthand that exists for fic that allows me to be forearmed going into it.
tropes are tropes whether we’re talking about fic or original works, don’t let anyone tell you the tropes differ because they don’t (except maybe what people are willing to write given there are no barriers to writing fic and ppl can write the WILD stuff) I think what is different what it is about reading the same idiots over and over, is that we know them. We already love them. And so you don’t need to do that work up front as a writer or a reader, you can just deal with the business of them falling in love. Which is, kind of what we’re here for anyway, right?
Also (I have been told though I don’t much do it myself) fic doesn’t have to follow the same structure of original works. When writing a novel you have to consider whether a scene adds anything to the plot, and if it doesn’t you take it out. Some fic writers, a fair few I’d wager, approach writing fic in the exact same way. But there is something about fic that also gives us license to say ‘hey you know what would be fun but serves no purpose at all...’ and write it anyway. Fic exists to fill the spaces between scenes, those dish-washing, curtain shopping, raunchy sex having moments that would otherwise be absent.
Sorry, that probably wasn’t the answer you were hoping for but its something I think about a lot.
28. Any writing advice that works for you and you feel like sharing?
There is a weird pressure and false expectation around here that you should ‘write for yourself’ and not be bothered about comments etc. Sometimes reading this kind of thing makes me (and maybe other writers idk - this advice is for anyone who feels the same) feel as though I am somehow selfish or needy if I feel sad about no one interacting with my work. And like, yeah, I wouldn’t recommend doing something solely for the approval of others. I’d be writing anyway I can’t ever stop that. But if I’m only writing for myself, I’m also not posting it. If I’m posting it, it’s because I wrote it for myself but also for you, I want to share it. So, if there’s no interaction then I’m going to go back to writing for myself. People don’t get to have it both ways. They don’t get to say ‘write for yourself but also give it to me to consume silently for free’. So that’s my advise, that the ‘only write for yourself’ advise is wrong.
