Julie Guthman takes issue with those who utilize the expression ‘obesity epidemic’ because she relates thatlanguage to a mischaracterization and mishandling of the subject.
Much like our readings this week, Guthman pinpoints a neoliberal governmentality characterized by efforts to shift the responsibility of care from public spheres to personal spheres. Broad structural forces contributing to issues like cancer and obesity are overlooked, and the burden of responsibility placed on the individual.
