Best Practices for InduSoft Web Studio Packaging Applications
“Can you fax the hardkey?”
InduSoft Web Studio uses both hardkeys and softkeys as licensing methods. Hardkeys are physical keys on a USB dongle that can be moved from computer to computer, while softkeys are a digital key that resides only on the machine that generates the Site Code for the license.
“I looked on the hardkey, but I can’t find the site code”
InduSoft uses two different hardkeys for licensing InduSoft Web Studio. The Safe Net Sentinel hardkey is a black hardkey that can be used on all Windows operating systems using a Full IWS installation. A Code Meter Wibu key is a silver hardkey is used in IWS CEView installations, or small footprint Windows Embedded operating systems.
On each hardkey, along with a registration card sent along with the both the hard key or the softkey, and also included on the purchase confirmation, is the NS number which is used to serialize licenses. The NS number is also used to associate the license and key (whether hard or soft) with your account. The NS number can also be used for license upgrades simply by providing it at the time of upgrade or to track the key, as in the case of multiple purchases.
Site Codes, however, are used in InduSoft Web Studio to authenticate a softkey license.
To locate the Site Code in InduSoft Web Studio Full Product Installation: Click on the Start Menu in Windows, select ‘All Programs’, then scroll down to the InduSoft Web Studio folder for the version that you want to register (if there are multiple IWS versions installed). Click on the folder to open the tree, then choose the Register Utility within the folder. (In Windows 8, look in ‘Apps’ on the Search Page for the ‘Register Utility’ following the correct IWS version that you want to license). The register utility will start showing a popup called, ‘Protection Manager’. Choose the ‘Softkey’ radio button then click ‘Check’ and the ‘Softkey Settings’ Dialog will open. If the machine has not been registered previously, all the fields will be blank.
To locate the Site Code in InduSoft Web Studio CEView Installation: Start the Remote agent on the XP Embedded or Windows 7 Embedded Compact (formerly CE) or Standard machine, and connect to the Development System Remote Access. (See Help >> Contents >> Remote Management >> Install EmbeddedView or CEView on a Target Device, and License the Runtime Software on the Target Device for more information. Push the button ‘License’ and the ‘License’ popup will open showing the current license on the machine (if any).
All Installations (cont.): Push the button, ‘Change License’, and your site code will be highlighted in the next popup. Copy and paste the site code, along with your P.O. or payment information, OR the NS Number (on the card sent to you when you purchased the product) into an email to [email protected], or into a Chat session (Choose ‘License’) with InduSoft. InduSoft will reply with a Site Key, which is then pasted into the ‘Site Key’ field. Click Authorize. A popup will indicate that the the Site Key has been accepted. The ‘Softkey Settings’ or ‘License’ (in CEView) Dialog will show what version that the license can be used with and how many Drivers, Thin Clients, Secure Viewers, and SMAs are authorized. Verify the information in this dialog against what you actually purchased in order to make sure that it is correct.
Pictures showing the licensing process, the NS Number, and the hardkeys are available at: http://www.indusoft.com/Support/Licensing about halfway down the page in the Licensing Flowchart.
