Description
The 1st Guards Infantry Division distinguished itself in the two-day battle of August 17–18 (29–30), 1813. Its regiments covered the retreat of the allied Austro-Russian-Prussian army after its defeat at Dresden on August 14–15 (26–27).
In the foreground is a column of Preobrazhensky Regiments, attacking the French with bayonets, under the command of Major General A.P. Ermolov, who took command from the seriously wounded Lieutenant General A.I. Osterman-Tolstoy (his arm was amputated on the battlefield). On the left, in the background, a group of soldiers carries General Osterman-Tolstoy, who lost consciousness after surgery, to the rear.
