Every Record I Own - Day 590: Infernal Coil Within a World Forgotten

SUMAC toured with the enigmatic cavernous blackened death metal band Infernal Coil on our East Coast tour in support of Love In Shadow back in the fall of 2018. Their debut album Within a World Forgotten accurately captures the vibe of their live show---a total bombardment on the senses, an often nearly indiscernible barrage of unholy sound, and a vehicle for some truly crushing riffs that occasionally erupt out of the bleak cacophony. Aside from enjoying their music, I also enjoyed the company of the Infernal Coil gents. Despite occupying a sonic space that is often popular for fascist knuckleheads and misanthropic edge-lords, the band were all staunchly progressive dudes whose artistic ire was pointed at the selfish, self-destructive, and xenophobic patterns ingrained in our modern culture.

Not sure where Infernal Coil is at these days. The band is the brainchild of guitarist/vocalist Blake Connally, formerly of Atlanta’s dark crust outfit Dead In The Dirt and now a resident of rural Idaho. The line-up on our tour was mostly comprised of friends recruited specifically for the trip, and my understanding is that Infernal Coil will continue to cycle through members as it moves forward. Given the nihilistic and nebulous sound of the band, I appreciate that the project is equally cryptic and devoid of career aspirations in practice. I look forward to hearing what they do next whenever they choose to crawl out of their cocoon, reborn in their next malevolent incarnation.
