While I have never intentionally tried to become pregnant, it never occurred to me that something was out of sync with my ovulation. I’ve spent most of my childbearing years birth control free, and not always mindful or responsible when it came to preventing pregnancy. So when I started coming down with all these symptoms and self-diagnosed my PCOS in 2017, I realized I’ve had it for over 20 years, and that my mother most likely had it. Because of my self-care practices, I was able to stay within the acceptable ranges of the health markers doctors look for, for years. And by acceptable, I mean, I didn’t require a prescription for anything. And as long as I wasn’t trying to get pregnant, my symptoms were ignored, by both my doctors and myself. It’s unfortunate that it takes difficulty conceiving for most to get a PCOS diagnosis. It is really unfair for a lot of people who desire to start a family at some point in time to think that all is well and then find out it isn’t. And because we don’t prioritize #fertility as a vital sign, not being able to conceive can feel like we’re being punished for something we didn’t know we did. It can feel like a curse, but I choose to see it as a gift. My diagnosis came at a time when I was supposed to be recovering from burnout but instead was pushing myself closer and closer to the edge. It took developing bursitis in my knees to bring me to a complete stop, forcing me to look at how I was showing up for myself and in my life. If it weren’t for PCOS, I would not have reconnected with my body and my menstrual cycle. I would not have done the self-assessment and the inner work to understand why my life didn’t turn out the way that I wanted and was working towards. PCOS allowed me to reclaim health coaching when I was just about ready to quit and focus on something else. So I am grateful for the diagnosis for helping me to make sense of my symptoms and facilitate a new chapter in my career. #infertilityuncovered #nationalinfertilityawarenessweek #niaw #pcosawareness #pcoshealthcoach #menstrualcycleawareness #fertilityawareness #pcosadvocacy https://www.instagram.com/p/Bwu0S0kjYST/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=4f209h4qmrhk
