INFINITE ADVENTURE - Garden Inspiration Books Versus Attending a Home Show
DISCLAIMER: All book titles here were provided by Netgalley. Tickets to the Anaheim Home and Garden Show came complimentary from a vendor friend's allotment to share with others. No other form of compensation was received. This statement per the requirements of the Federal Trade Commission. Since my husband and I still live in an apartment, we're not thinking of doing our own garden just yet. However, when someone offered us complimentary tickets to the Anaheim Home and Garden Show, it got me thinking about how much advice books alone could give in this area, compared to what one might see in person. Since it didn't make sense to be looking at how-to books, seeing as we don't yet have a garden or landscape to work on, I decided to look over a few garden books and see how they might provide inspiration. Gardenista: The Definitive Guide to Stylish Outdoor Spaces by Michelle Slatalla and the editors of GARDENISTA, turned out to be a great showcase of showing things that could be done not only with plants in the garden but how to make areas to enjoy a garden around. Topics included a garden's color palette, design ideas, and expert advice on landscape and garden design. This last item made the book as much as how-to as well something to spark ideas. The book is also abundant with a good mix of large and small pictures to illustrate the topics and suggestions. To look at a specific garden for inspiration, particularly give the drought conditions in California, I flipped through the pages of The Bold Dry Garden: Lessons from the Ruth Bancroft Garden. The book talks about the history of the Ruth Bancroft Garden and how it went from being a private endeavor later opened to the public. It then goes into great detail on the signature plants of the garden, informing anyone interested in those type of plants what to expect from them. I then stacked up what these books showed me to what we'd seen and heard visiting the Anaheim Home and Garden Show on August 21st, 2016. It actually ran that Friday through Sunday, but we came through on Sunday afternoon. While my understanding was that this event may have had lower attendance than normal due to local forest fires, I'm hoping it gives an accurate sample to work my impressions from. At this event, it was clear that garden was referred to second because the majority of items were for the home. Many would be items placed or used outdoors, such as storage sheds, but these are not garden in the same sort of sense. In terms of actual garden and landscaping related booths, these amounted to just a handful. It seems that the best place to look for ideas might be books like the above, or magazines, or the internet, and then specifically if possible target visiting stores that specalize in what interests you versus finding inspiration in the store. That said, the show definitely has value when looking for items to complement your gardening landscape vision! Here are some photos from our visit to the Anaheim Home and Garden Show in August.
#INFINITEADVENTURE - Travel Guide for San Diego Old Town
My husband and I have gone to Comic-Con International: San Diego for 20 years now. For the last couple years, we've stayed in Old Town, but hadn't previously had the chance to explore it. To get a sense of what was there, we decided to try out a travel guide to see what it might tell us. Moon San Diego sounded promising as it claimed to be written by a local, so we thought it might provide added insights than a better known guide. From what it told us, the shops all seemed to close at 6 p.m. and there was absolutely no indication of any restaurants. Since we didn't check into the hotel until 5 p.m., we raced across the street to see what we could see before everything closed... or so we thought! It pleased us to find out not only was Old Town San Diego open longer than we thought (until 9 p.m.), there were several restaurants open until 11pm. None of these insights were provided by our travel guidebook! So the two of us had a wonderful time just discovering Old Town San Diego on our own. We then went inside the Plaza de Oro, which is where most of the shops were, along with a performance stage. At the center is the restaurant Casa de Reyes, where we enjoyed combination meals to sample a wide variety their offerings. I had a beef tamale, cheese enchilada, and my favorite Mexican food... the chile relleno! Not to mention the great guacamole they brought to our table when we ordered it extra. As our meal got underway, musicians got on stage and performed as well. A great evening to prep for Comic-Con, and we're so glad we took the time. It just would have been nice to have the travel guide be more helpful. It's probably great if you planned to spend all day there or earlier in the day. INFINITE ADVENTURE is intended to try out books or related items that somehow tie in to the world of travel and personal adventure. Features will generally consist of the site administrator documenting how she attempts to use an item as part of her own travel or other adventures.

58 What are five ways to win your heart?Being kind, being clever, being understanding, sharing plenty of my interests, allowing me some space.
75 What’s the sweetest thing anyone’s ever done for you?To be honest, kindness is quite commonly given to me, so in that regard I’m blessed. There’s no single act that stands out head and shoulders - not one I can remember right away, at least.
76 What’s the sweetest thing you’ve ever done for someone?Well, that’s in the eye of the beholder, evidently.
But I donate blood; I’ve sent people letters, postcards and presents; I try to always there if somebody needs to vent or rant; I’ve held and hugged those who required it; I intend to be friendly to all I meet.
