Cloud is sometimes surprised to find himself married to Sephiroth, but nothing surprises him more than those moments when he realizes he’s married to a total nerd, and that that same nerd is none other than the Great Sephiroth, who’s been standing in front of him for ages talking nonstop about who knows what Materia and its qualities with full detail without pausing for even a moment.

Cloud always knew Sephiroth was intelligent. That is like part of whole Image of General Sephiroth Shinra promoted. Just obviously that image was about a very specific kind of intelligence but still as Cloud initially got to know Sephiroth he quickly realised that the intelligence is very much a part of Sephiroth even if it isn't how Shinra portrays him.

It takes a little for him to realise exactly how nerdy Sephiroth is. It's not something Sephiroth hides but it's also not something he promotes or I think is even that consciously aware of (all the Shinra scientists are kind of nerdy it's just they're nerdy about unethical science experiments but that doesn't change the fact a hyperfixation infodump is not an uncommon thing in those labs). Also because he was promoted so quickly there's this level of, well yeah he's just telling those under him important information they need to know in order to survive and succeed in the military.

Which as I'm writing this it's not the info dumping that has Cloud realise how deeply nerdy Sephiroth is. The info dumping does a bit align with Sephiroth's general I Am The General thing. What makes Cloud realise (and like remember) how nerdy Sephiroth is is how Sephiroth reacts to new information about one of these topics.

Because Cloud (or Zack or anyone else) witnesses a materia have a new unknown effect (because being affected by another spell at the same time or something) and their reaction is very "huh, that's interesting" storing it away for a possible future battle usage. But Sephiroth is immediately going for the academic papers to see if there is any record of this effect that's in them and taking detailed notes about it. And keeps going on about it until he is satisfied he's got it understood and adequately documented and that's that instance Cloud remembers he married a man who is actually a massive nerdy academic at heart. And that the same man happens to be the big terrifying General Sephiroth.

Also the fact Sephiroth absolutely thinks academic papers and like War Theory books are perfectly appropriate bedtime stories for his children. You can't even say it's because that's what he was read to because nobody was reading him bedtime stories as a child but to Sephiroth these are clearly the most interesting things to read so he will read them to his children.
