Gaius changed.
He doesn’t succumb to the itch anymore, even if Garreg Mach had a serious case of carelessness. Heck, there were even valuables just lying around, scattered in random parts of the monastery just waiting to be taken. Somehow, most people don’t take them.
They’re either too nice, or too blind. Or maybe they just can’t be bothered with picking up things from the ground.
Gaius ignored them too, not wanting to sully his already questionable name. He’s been doing a fine job keeping his sticky fingers to himself-- right until he saw it.
It was early in the day, not much people around yet in the Great Hall. But there in the kitchen, unattended, was the most delicious looking cake he’s ever seen. With cream whiter than snow, a single strawberry on top, and fluffiness that revealed itself even with just a glance. It was heaven incarnate-- the perfect angel cake.
“Oh, baby. You come here often?” He was drooling. He was already holding a knife, ready to slice into the perfect delicacy. He knew it was someone else’s so he had the decency to only take a slice-- half a cake is still a slice-- and leave the rest to its rightful owner. He’s a generous guy, he can share.
Right as he finished taking what isn’t his, a thought comes to mind. A single candy lies where the missing half of the cake should be, a form of gratitude for this generous donation to his cause. A single strawberry hard candy for a single strawberry-- that should be enough of a replacement!
Right as he thinks about exiting the Great Hall and enjoy his loot, he feels a chill down his spine. Was someone coming? The forces that be warned him and he takes it as the truth. He leaps from the kitchen counters and blitzes to one of the pillars, hiding behind it, nabbed delicacy in hand. Just in case someone really was coming, he’d rather not be caught red-handed.
Was he already eating it? Absolutely.
