Standing away from the crowd, Jackson Maverick nursed a whiskey, neat. Most of his friends--well, those he’d called his friends--peaked in high school, where his life had taken him down an entirely different path. 1st round, 1st pick, he’d been the golden boy of the NHL for years, until his retirement in his 40s, an age that was rare to be playing at still. Now, he ran a little tattoo shop in the art district, something else he’d poured his very soul into. To Jackson, soul was everything, and it always had been. Moving towards a few other people, thick fingers brushed the shoulder of someone he’d not seen in years--near 30, if he remembered correctly. “There’s a sight for sore eyes,” he remarked, his voice soft.
