Sacred
Jugo tended to the temple. One of his many duties as the son of both the emperor and champion of the Gentle Darkness was to tend to the Temple of Gentle Darkness. It was always cool and quiet inside. He never felt the weight of life in here nor any sense of the claustrophobic coddling of Yubel and his father. It was a blessing to have been chosen as the champion. Though he missed life outside the temple at times, he never felt the urge to leave as visitors always came to talk.
They were never much for conversation. The visitors tended to be pilgrims or some form of worshiper. They left offerings to Gentle Darkness and prayed. No one ever saw his face anymore. It was one of the stuffy rules of being the champion he disliked. He was to stay within the darkness shrouded by a veil and a thick lattice wall between him and visitors. Tonight, a very fascinating pilgrim came into the temple.
He had hair a striking blonde like the golden wheat he could see from his window. The man’s eyes were two different colors. One a cool sapphire blue and the other a gleaming emerald, though they fell closed from pain a minute later. The man had been attacked and was bleeding heavily into the marble floors. He soon jerked over in a dead faint.
Jugo stood stock still for a moment in complete shock. Who was this man? Should he help? A tired groan was his deciding factor as he gently pushed a secret door in the thick lattice that disconnected him from the worship room and hurried to the man’s side. He brought him into his chambers and quickly began treating the wound in his side. Then out of fear of the man being caught by however made the wound as well as Jugo’s father. He cleaned up all the blood from the floor.
Jugo tended the blonde as he healed fading in and out of a fever. He remained hidden behind his thick veil, hooded robes and gloves. As much as he despised them, they were a sacred practice for champions like him. Eventually the man came around, he blinked awake with a groan as Jugo held a cool wet cloth to his head. “Where am I,” he asked confused at the dark room light by just a few candles. “You are in the inner temple of Gentle Darkness,” Jugo replied, “I’m Jugo.”
“I am Mamoru,” he replied with a smile, “I guess I have you to thank for saving me.” “Don’t thank me until you are fully healed,” Jugo quipped. It was a few more weeks of waiting before Jugo was able to sneak the man out of the temple. He was sad to see Mamoru go as he had grown to like the man and his personality. However, he didn’t have to be sad for long.
Mamoru returned the next day with and offering of wheat cakes. He set them on the altar and leaned against the lattice that his Jugo away. “Hey again,” he said smiling when he heard the quiet thud of Jugo leaning on his side of the lattice. “Welcome back,” Jugo whispered. These interactions continued for months. Mamoru would tell him of his journeys across the land as a bodyguard for hire. He told Jugo of a land to the east were the savage people rode giant heavy animals called elephants into battle that could crush men beneath their feet.
He would tell him about traders to the south of imaginable wealth in gold and crystals of all kinds. He brought many things to Jugo from his journeys. Feathers from Kingfisher birds, spices from the east, silks from China, metalwork from the south, and so many pretty stones from each river he crossed. He said as he carried these stones for him over the course of his trips he would always think of Jugo. Jugo, in the times Mamoru was away, would hold these things close to his chest and think about what it would be like to hold Mamoru.
The small conversations slowly became whispered words of love through the holes in the lattice. Some days it was soft words of adoration and kindness. Some days it was words that would light Jugo’s very core with pleasure and want. They could never touch however, the law forbade it. “Why must I never see you,” Mamoru asked leaning close to the lattice while Jugo did the same desperate to feel the barest bit of Mamoru’s warmth.
“I am bound to service for the Gentle Darkness,” Jugo whispered, “I am to never leave the temple and his embrace. I am supposed to be forever pure and chaste. It’s the law. To disobey is punishable by death, even for me.” Mamoru was silent for a moment before with a bit of struggle he pushed his pinky through the lattice. Jugo hooked his own with it a feeling of happiness course through him. “I don’t care,” Mamoru said his voice filled to the brim with conviction, “I could die a hundred deaths happy if I could only hold you in my arms for a night.”
Jugo trembled at the words then he gently pushed Mamoru’s finger back and eased the secret door open. He yanked the blonde within so fast they fell on top of one another. Mamoru was startled but quickly kicked the door behind him shut. Jugo took his hand and led him deep within the temple. They stopped in Jugo’s chambers and the prince pushed the man to sit on the bed. “I want to hold you to,” Jugo whispered. Slowly, he took off his gloves revealing pale and delicate skin from being hidden in the dark. With a small tug, his robes began to fall away revealing his brown short hair and more pale skin. Finally, mamoru was the one to drop the veil to reveal eyes of deep brown with flecks of gold.
“Your more beautiful than I ever could have imagined,” Mamoru said breathlessly turning Jugo red with embarrassment. Mamoru then pulled him into an embrace fulfilling every whispered word over their time separated by sacred walls. The next morning no god struck them down, no guard barged in to yell, and no servant entered that gasped and dropped a tray loudly. They simply slipped into the night never to be seen again. Though some report that a blonde man you visited the temple for son long had recently married a man with brown hair and eyes of brown and gold in Egypt.

Day 6: Intertwined
Jougo yawned, groaning as the morning sun refused to let him sleep. The young prince tried to roll over and go back to sleep when he noticed a pair of arms wrapped tightly around him. He blinked a few times trying to see whoever it was that was holding him so closely, Mamoru’s sleeping face slowly coming into focus. Jougo hadn’t recognized him immediately without the mask on. There had been a really strong storm last night and Mamoru had insisted Jougo stay with him for the night instead of trying to leave and possibly getting hurt. And Jougo had insisted they share the bed instead of letting Mamoru sleep on the floor.
Jougo took in the blonde boy’s peaceful face, his soft breathing, his eyes moving around under his eyelids, still dreaming. He still wondered what those eyes looked like when they were open, what color were they? What if they were multiple colors? Was that even possible? Whatever they looked like, Jougo knew they were beautiful. There was no way they couldn’t be. Mamoru mumbled something in his sleep and pulled Jougo closer, the smaller boy blushing before he snuggled into his captors chest, wrapping his arms around him and falling asleep again.
Mamoru was still sound asleep as he subconsciously nuzzled Jougo’s hair, mumbling something barely audible, “Love you…”
