LUCIENNE HAD BEEN CURIOUSLY WATCHING THE APPROACHING OBJECT FROM BELOW—— too late, it registered in his mind that he should probably RUN from it rather than marvel at it. He’d done a good frantic dash, but managed not entirely to avoid the impact. The shrieking noise from the (meteor? falling star? whatever it was; he was more concerned with himself than to care to know) object was NOTHING, he decided, against the sound of his own, as he reveled in agony, come to face with the fact that the heat had melted half his fucking SKIN off. After ten or twenty minutes, the pain subsided (although he hated them, he thanked God for those scientists in the American army, for were it not for them, he’d have no pain tolerance at all & would’ve been paralysed for a good week), & he dragged himself towards its source, wanting to at least see what it was that had done this to him.
FUCK OUTER SPACE!
He was surprised to see a LIFEFORM by the rubble, emanating a soft blue light amongst the green. HE DARED NOT SAY ANYTHING, but made no clear effort to hide—— if this had been INTENTIONAL, he wanted revenge. & even if it hadn’t been, then why not? HE WAS PETTY.
☢ >> The first thing Nina noticed -- before she’d even stood up fully, before the light from her explosive landing had faded away -- was the smell of burning flesh.
And her first reaction to that smell was a pang of hunger, as Zero flooded her mind with sense-memories of charred skin crackling in her mouth and the taste of blood and smoke. Saliva welled up under her tongue.
Nina swallowed it, and looked around for the source of the smell, and forced her hunger down as best she could. Her senses told her that, whoever it was, they were still alive, and that meant that she had to -- do something. Make it right. It was her crash-landing that had done this. Her fault that someone had suffered those burns. Just what she was going to do -- what she could do -- Nina didn’t know, but she couldn’t just do nothing. She gathered herself up from the ground and climbed out of the crater, then took a good look at the person she’d nearly incinerated.
“....Can you speak?”
