The only child of two parents who came from previously influential families once upon a time. Her father died when she was too young to remember even the outline of his face without the help of photos, so her mother spent her childhood raising her as a single parent. Her mother and her led financially unstable lives until her mother found employment as a domestic worker for a wealthy lady in the countryside. Work was exchanged for a place for the both of them to stay, food and education provided to Yuuna as a child with the condition that once she finished her daily studies she also had to help in the domestic work. Luckily for Yuuna, the lady who she’d come to refer to as “ Madame ” also happened to have a son around the same age as her, and, although they had a difference of status in the house, seemed to get along well as childhood companions during this time.
The story from here takes a natural progression of any fairy tale: Her mother passes away from illness in her early teenage years. Seeing the child that had been left behind in state of vulnerability, the Madame assumed the role of her guardian and designating Yuuna as the new domestic worker, forcing her to work ridiculously difficult jobs and displaying more obvious mistreatment towards her. Despite the hardships, Yuuna remained ever hardworking and kind through it all, harboring little to no ill will and pushing through these obstacles with a pure heart. In the end, as all fairy tales progress, her sweet nature overcomes all trials and wins her the heart of her story’s “ prince charming ”, the son of the Madame she had grown up with. And so, the fairy tale ends.
Except that’s not how this tale progressed.
While it’s true that Yuuna continued being a worker under her Madame after she became her guardian, it was by personal choice as she wasn’t in a position to become independent either legally nor financially. Like before, the work is a way to exchange for things like housing, food, finances and access to knowledge that might be difficult to acquire on her own. While her employer isn’t downright malignant towards her, she isn’t particularly caring or invested into Yuuna, adopting a more distanced relationship between the two. While it isn’t the most ideal scenario, Yuuna saw it as something temporary to deal with it until she could successfully move out on her own to pursue her own life and ambitions. And her “ prince charming ” ?
He’s “ in love ” with her, of course. It’s what he tells Yuuna, but his affections are obsessive and a source of misfortune and anxiety for her. Rejection and noncompliance don’t yield positive conclusions for her, so she’s been forced to adapt to seem more conceding to his image of her he’s deluded himself into creating. The natural ending he intends to reach for the two of them is the ever elusive “ happily ever after ”. She would rather tear up that ending and depart from this place as soon as possible.
Yuuna knows every crack in every brick in the wall surrounding the estate. Over and over, she’s walked along it, seemingly trapped inside a castle.
Yuuna portrays herself as a demure, kindhearted person. She tends to be conflict avoidant and will often times bend towards the will of others if it will avoid any immediate, direct trouble. She acts pretty soft spoken and introverted, looking to be helpful and deferring authority / leadership to others. Although exuding a quiet demeanor, Yuuna displays a high level of optimism, sometimes even coming close to something like a naïve, idealistic way of viewing the world. Polite, serene and compassionate -- she truly showcases herself as a classic “ princess ”.
But all of that is, essentially, an act itself, a role she assumes when interacting with others as learned defense mechanism. The reality of who Yuuna is like a shadow in the mirror. She’s someone who’s far more realistic and analytical and bitter than her act lets on. While Yuuna isn’t the coldest person one could meet, she’s nowhere near as “ innocent and pure ” as one would think, preferring to be more selective about who receives her actual kindness and compassion. She acts more naïve than she really is as a way of disarming people and covering up how perceptive and competent she can be.
Yuuna comprehends life more logically, sometimes having difficulty understanding how she herself feels at times or, in worst cases, suppressing any intense emotions. Despite this, she’s the kind of person that can push herself through any obstacle. Above all, Yuuna’s two guiding beliefs are: “ to live well by doing what one truly wants ” and “ only by staying alive can one hope to overturn unfortunate circumstances ”. She’s stubborn and not afraid of getting dirty, if required. And although she might not be as kindhearted and pure as others, Yuuna is nevertheless capable of being a reliable, warm companion to her loved ones.
