THE MAGNITUDE OF LAUGHTER
Amidst a world full of rogue situations we have no power over, sadness is and will always be prevalent. It is a principle in life, and although it couldn’t be completely eradicated, there are certain ways around it that we dub as coping mechanisms. There are a lot of coping mechanisms or remedies in this world. Some people may consider theirs as exercising, or reading, or even crying. The list goes on, but a stand out mechanism is perhaps laughter, which has more than enough quotes passed down that vouch for its effectiveness. As said by British style icon Audrey Hepburn, laughter “cures a multitude of ills”. It really does, and even Science agrees—however, being a countermeasure isn’t the only case where laughter has proved itself tangibly vital to humankind.
Most laughter is caused by amusement, possibly from an entertaining Korean drama or a delightful treat like Swiss chocolate. Despite that fact, laughter still doesn’t always hail from mirth. Many people laugh under awkward instances, in the same way they laugh to reassure their relations with a person. Laughter is a natural antidote for tension as it reminds people that they are in the same boat of unsurety. This already establishes a connection between two characters which further goes to show that laughter helps secure alliances. Besides this, laughter is essential as it helps put things in perspective. This is in correlation with it being a countermeasure as well as an antidote for tension. With laughter, we are able to see that not everything needs to be taken seriously.
It is for these reasons, and many more, that laughter proves to be significant as well as beneficial. To conclude, laughter is important because it boosts certain moods into a happy one and it signals that us individuals are capable of keeping our emotions in check. In addition, laughter is important as it helps indicate to fellow people we are engaged in conversation with that we are more approachable and open. Thus, spreading laughter is important. So if you’re feeling down and looking for a particular way to be uplifted, maybe invite a few friends you can comically talk to or watch a Disney movie with. Keep your Genovian head high and smile to be a catalyst for one of the most blessed abilities we can all do—laugh.
