Old tools get new uses in this new reality. To make sense of data, of information, we, the receptors, need to analyze , to relate. Symbols, metaphors, have a role in this. Semaphores, information carriers, of meaning, of ideas and data and of course, lets be said that storytelling is such an asset in data management. Information Anxiety

Collette Jeffrey presented this lecture to us after our christmas break. 

What is information and what is data and do we know the difference. I enjoyed this lecture the most out of all of them as she talked and explained deeply without moving on too fast and also it was very interactive. 

Information is data that has been processed in a way thats meaningful to the individual. 

Data can be words,numbers, dates, images sounds etc. 

In this lecture we were recommended to read the book of “Information Anxiety” by Richard Saul Wurman, 1991 and the new version of 2001, we were also recommended to read the Sunday Times. In visual communication we need to know what is going on around us so we can communicate our ideas, we need to make sure we are up to date with all the news and media around us. 

There was a diagram displayed upon the projector and it made me reflect upon my techniques and how I work creatively also how I can improve. These were the themes, Bulk to bulk out the cultural information this is research when committing to a project I must create a dense collection of research to help spark my ideas and developments. Conversational information, Analysing people this can be target market research going out into there streets and asking people their opinions on a matter or just asking peers or friends, family members. Reference information, this being research in the library or online on the web. News information reading newspapers, watching news on TV or just reading the new online. 

We took part in some research to see how long we seen on our smartphones. I am constantly on my phone and this made me reflect on my day to day life and how I rely so much on my phone in a year I look at my phone 2,000,000 times. This talk was also about how we present our data is graphic design and illustration taking the data away or are we actually enforcing the data into peoples minds in presentations and meetings.
