Supermarket Cycling Life

In November, before commencing cycle365project, I took some long exposure night images in Sainsburys and Asda carparks. I decided to return with cycling in mind, tempted to do a comparison between the two sites but knowing there would be too many variables to make it meaningful. Nonetheless, I felt if would be an indicator of cycling culture in the town.

I spent half an hour at each location. Asda is more easily accessible for cyclists so it was no surprise that they had the greater number of cycling visitors. Sainsburys, a little more removed from centres of population, does have better safe cycling access provision, though only four lock up stands, as far as I could see.

It’s the overall activity that is of real interest rather than any supermarket comparison. Today’s weather is warmer, sunnier and less breezy than recent days; I was expecting to see greater numbers.

Cycling culture in the U.K. has much room for development but it’s not going to happen without investment. Academic studies have been carried out and the benefits are becoming widely accepted but it is difficult in these cash strapped times for the infrastructure to be provided. Invest in infrastructure and it will be used. It needs forward thinking decision makers to enable the benefits to come. A cycling Transport Secretary would be a good start.

Occupy LIFE

America is more than "IF I CAN YOU CAN" it is "IF I CAN AND YOU CANNOT, I WILL HELP YOU CAN" I personally reach out and teach, instruct, volunteer to help others do the very same things we are talking about and do and are doing right now. That's how I "OCCUPY" If those of us who can and do assisted those of us who cannot or do not. This country would be leading once again. Yet we have become so selfish and greedy, self contained and fearful. Our government system is corrupt and broken, or financial markets are unregulated and unabashedly brazen in their risk taking and revenue generation. Our education system is antiquated to a point that it is nearly obsolete our infrastructure is crumbling to the points of disaster. And yes Americans have become lazy and apathetic, these issue are the results of decades of behavior, this didn't happen in the last 10 years, CERTAINLY not in the last two years. I would like to agree that the time for discussing the reasons has past and the time for discussing the SOLUTIONS has come. Let us remove this invisible shield of Left, Right, Democrat, Republican, conservative, progressive, brown, white, and live under the umbrella of Human Beings working towards a better world for all.
