The German Dramatic Soprano Inge Borkh singing the magnificent aria 'In Questa Reggia' from Puccini's opera Turandot.

A mesmerising exhibition of vocal strength and characterisation from Borkh. The voice is so finely layered, with a capricious, mercenary icy texture and sheer flames in the upper register. The musical and theatrical instincts are so well honed too, always creating dramatic suspense in the vocal line, until she is able to ignite the piece to a thrilling crescendo. The row of High B's are so in tune with the character. They actually sound more than musical notes- they ARE Turandot's cries. 

She also creates a compelling contrast to the character of Turandot too, providing a more womanly dichotomy with some beautiful lyricism that alludes to Turandot's inner despair and melancholy, as well as the ostensibly ruthless and stoical Royal psychopath that is predominantly played by most Sopranos. The key element to Turandot is that she is a WOMAN, burdened with the past persecutions of women in her position, who has repressed her emotional responsiveness to ensure her very survival. As a psychological study, it's incredibly complex, and an operatic character that very few portray as accurately as Borkh.
