Howdy! I've been meaning to join some roleplay groups, but I've been uber nervous. I'm scared to hop into a role play with a character and form, but do something wrong. Any tips for joining rp groups?
Yes yes, of course! First of all, make sure you’re pretty familiar with things. If you used to indie rp, you have to get acclimate to RPing only in one group.
Basics for joining a closed group:
1) Understand that it is not acceptable to roleplay with people who are not members
2) Read and understand the rules/plot. JUST DO IT. Message the admin for clarification. Sometimes people put buzzwords and phrases in these pages to make sure you’ve read them, which you’ll need to include on your app.
Basics for choosing a game:
1) Decide what type of roleplaying you want to do. Do you enjoy writing, and want multi-para games? Do you prefer gif chats? What kind of writing do you like? *actions* or full sentences? check tags like para rpg, literate rpg, multipara rpg, etc. for these things.
2) Decide what kind of game you want. A fandom? A celeb? A certain type of plot? You can search fandom rpg, or anything not so specific. crossover rpg, original rpg, and au rpg are also good tags.
3) Decide what kind of app you’re willing to fill out. Bio RPGs include a biography of pre-written characters, but usually require a writing sample (2-3 paragrahs in character or out, depending). OC RPGs (or applying to a bio rpg with an OC) mean you have to come up with your character all on your own, background and everything. Skeleton RPGs will give a faceclaim (usually, not always), a personality, and often a few facts/traits. You then make up the background. Appless RPGs require none of the above.
4) STALK THE ALREADY ACTIVE CHARACTERS. Go to their blogroll or masterlist, and click through the blogs. See how that group RPs in general, and if you’re compatible.
5) If an admin is rude to you in a response (whether you ask a question anonymously or not) DO NOT JOIN. You’ll set yourself up for hell.
6) If you don’t know what tags to looks through, check any RPH promotion tags for ideas. (mine is here)
For first time roleplaying in groups (or at all) you can always check beginner rpg tag for beginner friendly games.
1) choose a game/genre/character that you enjoy!
2) if their is an OOC blog (chatzy/skype) get in, introduce yourself and your muse, and get to know people. If there isn’t, message characters and ask to plot.
3) Stay true to character (even if it’s your own OC)
4) if someone is listed as a connection (a newer fad in the rpg world, to give listed characters premade relationships) talk to that mun and start rping with them. You already ‘know’ each other, so suggest a para or interaction, talk to one another about how they’ll relate, etc.
5) Do NOT join only for a ship
6) Don’t be afraid of your character being disliked
7) Separation of mun and muse is big. If my character is an asshole, that doesn’t mean I am. Most people know this!
8) Recognize that in the US it is illegal to smut with those underage, even if you’re underage yourself.
9) Recognize that if you don’t want to smut at all, you don’t have to. You can time jump, if it’s an in character thing, or simply post on your blog / tell the admins that you simply are not comfortable with smut.
10) Tag triggers. Self-harm, suicide, eating disorders, guns, excessive violence, torture, rape, etc., even in personal head canons. Put them under a read-more if applicable.
11) ASK FOR RPG RECs FROM PEOPLE YOU TRUST. Give an RPH a shout and ask if they know of any good rpgs for ‘xyz’ fandom, or ‘xyz’ type of interaction. pretendersrpa has a list of diverse RPGs that I suggest you check out.
Overall, don’t be scared! It’s always gonna be someone’s first time in a game. Find or write a character you have a muse for, and apply! If you don’t get accepted to one, apply for another! Improve your writing, and go have fun! DON’T BE NERVOUS. You can always tell people when you join THIS IS MY FIRST RPG and they will understand! (if not, fuck ‘em.) If it’s a prewritten character, and you’re afraid of acting OOC, just message the admins and they should be more than helpful! But don’t forget once the character is yours, it’s yours.
GOOD LUCK! I HOPE THIS HELPED!
