John Singer Sargent rose to fame for his finely rendered oil portraits. At his peak, he was one of the most sought after artists for portrait commissions. But, did you know he was also a remarkable watercolorist? Watercolors brought out a different side to Sargent's work. His meticulous oil portraits feature Notan… muted colors, dark and imposing backgrounds, bright lights, and all on finely rendered subjects. However, his watercolors are bright, colorful, loose and impressionist. I imagine that after slaving away over his portrait commissions for important (and probably also needy) people, some of the joy may have been taken out of painting for him. I also imagine his watercolor work probably felt more like a hobby…a refreshing break. JSS ended up creating more than 2,000 watercolors during his illustrious career. And I enjoy studying every one. We will be following the John Singer Sargent approach to watercolor in my upcoming workshop scheduled for November 6 at the Little House at Sunnybrook Farm near Columbia, TN.
