author’s note: requested by @deutoplasm i love makki. thats it.
kyosuke had always been somewhat awkward.
maybe that was an understatement; he’s totally awkward.
but how could he not be? when his annoyingly persistent crush on you rendered him speechless anytime you were in the vicinity — especially in those quiet moments whenever your hand so much as brushed against his. or even when you were always the first to know something was off, watching him with hawk-like focus.
and it wasn’t like it was subtle either. the teasing kyosuke had to endure from his peers was relentless; a plethora of knowing smirks and chuckles always seemed to follow him whenever you were in his presence.
so why was it so hard for you to notice his feelings?
“makki!” a hand waved in front of his face, snapping him out of his thoughts quickly. “are you even listening?”
kyosuke blinked in confusion.
what were you saying?
he shot you an apologetic smile before straightening up.
“uh…”
“i knew it!”
“sorry.” he said while frowning. “what were we talking about again?”
the both of you were sat at a cafe not too far away from your college, catching up over some snacks.
“the blind date?” you deadpanned, lifting your cup to take a sip of your latte. “it’s tomorrow, remember? i texted you all the details a few days ago.”
the man groaned. “do i really have to go? none of them have worked out so far.”
part of him hated it. just how easy it was for you to make his world stop. but, part of him loved it and knew you meant well.
“you can’t be lonely forever, you know.” your hand reached for his, squeezing it in reassurance before continuing. “i just want you to put yourself out there and preferably not die alone.”
“with the way you’re talking, you think i’m hopeless, right?”
“you said it yourself. not me.”
“good to know just how much faith you have in me.” he mused. “i can be charming, you know.”
“sure you can.”
kyosuke shook his head in disbelief before letting out a chuckle.
“i really can be.” he pushed once again.
the knowing smile playing on your lips only spurred the man further. he leaned over the table, hand coming to brush your hair out of your eyes before smiling softly. and you don’t know why your breath hitched in your throat, maybe it was the summer heat or perhaps even the way kyosuke kept his gaze on you or the way his hair framed his face so perfectly…
what?
he scoffed. “now look at who's spacing. you good?”
you blinked. once. then twice before nodding sheepishly and taking another loud sip of the latte. if your mind wasn’t reeling before it definitely was now.
“hmm, nishi told me something the other day, you know.” you changed the subject swiftly.
kyosuke raised an eyebrow before gesturing for you to continue.
“apparently you had a long-time crush on someone.” there was a small pause from you. “do you even know how embarrassing it was for nishi hiroto to tell me something about my own best friend? it was like a humiliation ritual.”
suddenly, the man opposite burst out in a fit of giggles, his eyes crinkling at the edges.
“wow, i’ll be sure to relay that to him.”
“i’m serious, makki.”
he only rolled his eyes, staring at you like you were crazy before you started up again.
“nishi wouldn’t tell me who it was. said it was ‘bro code’, as if his lies couldn’t get any worse.” your fingers tapped on the table lightly. “are you two scheming against me or something?”
he didn’t deny it. instead, he grinned widely.
“maybe. maybe not.” taking a big bite of the croissant in front of him, he mumbled. “i’m not going to tell you who it is— i mean was though...”
mentally noting his slip-up, your finger edged its way forward to wipe the crumb nestled on the side of his mouth. “well, i figured. do you always have to eat so carelessly?”
as if in a gaze, kyosuke froze as his mind registered what had just happened before he pressed his lips thinly together.
and if that wasn’t worse, you started to hurriedly collect your belongings, standing up abruptly with eyes widened.
“shit, i forgot something. i have to go, but don’t forget the date and make sure you text me after.” your words were barely comprehensible with how fast you were speaking. “bye!”
kyosuke leaned into his chair, sighing loudly before burying his face in his hands. finally, he was alone with all his thoughts— which wasn’t an entirely good thing but at least it was better than being in your presence and him fucking up everything.
but that was until the cafe’s bell rang echoed as someone entered through the door.
“is that my favourite friend i see over there, fujimaki kyosuke?” a voice boomed.
he knew that voice. once again, the man raised his head to see the bane of his existence, nishi hiroto. well, not truly but if the shoe fit. kyosuke’s immediate reaction was to groan loudly for the nth time.
nishi pulled the chair you had been sitting only barely minutes, taking a seat with a grin on his face.
“i just saw [name] rushing out of here. have you finally told her?”
the other man looked away then, a frown playing on his lips.
“i wish. she said she had somewhere to be.”
“oh.”
kyosuke squinted his eyes. “nevermind that. why on earth did you tell her about the crush thing?”
“you weren’t there.” nishi raised his hands in mock surrender. “she literally cornered me and asked why you were acting so weird around her. i was practically being held at gun-point!”
“i’m so finished. she set me up on another blind date.”
“that’s on you for being so single.” the older man chuckled before reaching over and swiping the other’s half-eaten croissant and munching on it.
“great. i guess today is just ‘bully kyosuke’ day, right?” he sighed, glancing out of the window to admire how quiet and serene the world outside looked.
“that’d be an amazing day to celebrate.”
“you know [name] said the same thing about you like five minutes before you arrived.” kyosuke remarked lightly.
“what?”
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
a few hours after the date on the next day, you had texted kyosuke to only receive no reply. you deemed it strange that you weren’t even left on ‘seen’.
lying on your bed, you stared up at the ceiling and sighed.
fine then. you thought. you’d just have to go to him.
collecting your house keys and pulling on a jacket, you called an uber.
after nearly twenty minutes on the road, you finally arrived at his house. you thanked the driver and stepped out, the air brushing against your skin as you stretched away the stiffness of the ride.
with quiet steps, you walked the path leading to his front door. upon reaching the door, you paused for a moment, then knocked softly. the night breeze swept by and rustling of the leaves became apparent. you waited around for a minute or so before hearing soft footsteps resonating from the other side. he fumbled with the lock before the door slowly opened.
there your best friend was. kyosuke, still in his smart attire, a velvet suit that looked way too good on him. but something else had caught your attention.
his down-turned lips. the way his eyes that were heavy with something; you couldn’t make it out. you broke the silence, stepping in as he moved out of the doorway.
“you okay?”
no response.
kyosuke walked down the hallway towards his own couch, plopping down — still without a word. and of course, you followed him.
“was it that bad?” the question floated lightly in the atmosphere.
reluctantly, he nodded. seeing his dejected expression snagged on your heartstrings. and hard. somehow, you’d always felt kyosuke’s sadness too deeply, carrying it quietly like it was your own burden to bear.
in the stillness of the moment, you slid on the couch next to him, slipping your hand into his and squeezing ever so slightly.
but you didn’t even catch it. how his eyes widened, and his lips pursed. the way his cheeks felt slightly warmer.
“you don’t have to say it. just know i’ll be here when you want to.” your head was rested comfortably on his shoulder now.
the man swallowed thickly. you were so so close, holding his hand like it was the most natural thing in the world. he glanced down — almost lovingly — at the top of your head.
as if sensing it, you straightened up; just to catch his gaze, sharp and almost piercing.
there was a nervous giggle from you. “kyosuke?”
“i like you.” the statement was soft, quiet — you almost missed it. but there was a glint in his eyes you couldn’t decipher. “i don’t want to go on those dates. not if they’re not with you.”
you shifted in your seat. “oh.”
“i hated them. hated how you refused to see me. started to even hate you for a small time, but i couldn’t even if i wanted. not you.”
“makki…”
his fingers interlaced with yours. “i’ve always wanted you. just give me a chance. to be your makki. your boyfriend.”
bringing your intertwined hands to his lips, he left a soft kiss on your hand.
your heart stuttered before you could fully react.
“you could’ve told me.” you said lightly.
“i wanted to. but i couldn’t for some reason.” a small smile broke out onto his lips. “but—“
you interrupted swiftly. “i will. go on a date with you i mean.”
kyosuke’s eyes widened before he shot up, startling you. “wait, really?”
you nodded shyly, standing up before he flung his arms around you, embracing you tightly.
“you won’t regret it.”
“i hope not.”
his warmth retracted as he pulled away, his face beaming with joy.
“wait. so that means the crush you had that nishi was going on about was on me?”
“maybe.” crimson painted his cheeks as he smiled once again.
