Because I never shared this years Treefort
Nothing gets on my nerves more than the characterization that Christine is a ditzy soprano because NO!! She’s in the throes of grief and to deny her recognition not only as a rising star but legacy of her father? It’s only human to want more, especially as a hungry artist who is but one of many “ballet girls.”
None to mention she shows grit, passion, and unapologetic raucousness, even to her detriment. One of my favourite moments is when, as an unwilling participant in the Phantoms wedding scheme yells:
“Have you gorged yourself, at last, in your lust for blood?”
Particularly in the 25th Anniversary edition, Christine is disgusted with him, angry and indignant despite being physically outmatched. She has prowess and courage, something that combined with her kindness is her key to escape.
So no, Christine isn’t an “airheaded soprano,” she is a tender, rising voice whom initially blends into a theatre of belting singers. But as she grows in grief and success, she makes herself heard with ire and force and grace.
